rereading this. great entertainment. clever plot. a tight one without too many characters or distracting sub-plots unlike chandler or ross or williams. sparse prose. very few similes. unlike flashy writers like raymond chandler.

Yeah, I liked it because it was easy to follow too. Seriously, I think I heard about one of Chandler's books being turned into a movie in the 40s and everybody was mad because nobody knew what the ending was, so they read the book and STILL didn't get an ending. And I've read a couple of his and they were far out, how did he become such a hit?

You might be thinking of The Big Sleep, where people didn't know who killed the chauffeur and apparently Chandler admitted he didn't know either, when asked. I like Chandler's prose but his plots aren't particularly enjoyable.

His plots are a *chore* to get through.
And how does he not know who killed the chauffeur when he's the one that wrote the damn book?
Between Chandler and Hammett, I think Hammett wins, I found The Thin Man a tad confusing too but nowhere near the mind warp Chandler is.

I've had mixed results with Chandler. The Lady in the Lake was great. The Long Goodbye was turgid. Most of the others fall inbetween, gravitating towards bad. With Hammett, Red Harvest and The Maltese Falcon were good, The Dain Curse was awful. As for Cain, this and The Postman Always Rings Twice are fantastic.
