Billy Zane's character was actually a decent guy to begin with? Rose's decision to abandon him in favor of dirt poor Jack doesn't seem an especially difficult one given he's consistently unbearable. Maybe give us the sequel where Cal raises that kid who helped him get off the ship until the stock market crash in 1929.

There are a number of different directions you could go with that idea, but I think Rose's motive for leaving Cal, were he a decent fiancé, would have been to be explained. Otherwise, she could come off as unlikable.
Also, there's the question of how will Cal react to Rose's favoring of Jake. Will Cal take a villainous turn at the sign of rejection? Will he let Rose go and move onto someone else?

How would it have been different if Joe Pesci was the Billy Zane character?
*Titanic-engraved pen stabbed into Jack's neck.*
"I don't give a fuck about a fucking iceberg you prick! Try drawing a sketch of Rose with this pen dipped in your blood, you pansy cocksucker you!"

A little off topic, but I like Billy Zane in the film better than any of the other characters... One of his finest moments next to his role as the Phantom... Hey here's an alternate take on the whole thing... Cal never killed himself after the stock market crash but came back to his true home and took up the lease of being the Phantom. It was a staged death to hide his identity. He was the father of the Phantom in the later Billy Zane film...

Well, that's basically what Notebook did. James Marsden was a saint and McAdans left his ass for poor (and mildly psychotic) Gosling anyway, and the audience was fine with it.
Zane's character is often criticized, but you read up on 1912 people, and he doesn't seem especially unrealistic.

And team up with The Shadow and The Rocketeer to fight Nazis in a heavily romanticized 1930s settings.
