This one looks pretty amazing and really crazy. Any opinions out there yet? I noticed the screening times are very limited, what gives? Especially if it's being touted as Nicholas Cage's best performance in years...

There is literally one theater playing this tonight near me. Crazy. I'm going to pre-order the bluray. Maybe I can make it out to see it before it's off the big screen. The trailer looks awesome.

so... I didnt really enjoy it as much as I thought I would but I did like it a lot and its a great Cage performance, finally a good role for him again.
Its not going to please everyone its quite slow and very psychedelic and non didactic BUT if you are into revenge and gore and like the eighties pulp feel and look you will love it.
There is a few lines that I believe will become instant classics.
Let me know if you have seen it I do have a few questions.
8/10 from me - Johannasons music has a lot to do with that.

Started watching. Any movie that starts with the song Starless by King Crimson is cool in my book!

There aren’t too many things more awesome than Nicolas Cage losing his shit!

A hypnotic, black hearted acid trip into the depths of hell.
This might’ve made a good movie if it were 80 minutes long but alas, we got a film 45 minutes too long, artsy to a fault and unforgivably boring. Nicholas Cage’s insanity is unleashed far too late in the run time and we are only graced with one truly *great* moment (the chainsaw fight). Technically impressive boasting stunning, trippy visuals but ultimately, this movie didn’t do much for me.
And Cage only does ONE bump of cocaine. I was expecting the fucker to go full on Jordan Belfort.
The biggest disappointment of 2018 thus far.
4/10

Did the slow exposition of the first half bother you at all? I hadn't heard of this one and just watched the trailer. It looks interesting, if perhaps a bit overly stylish, but I suppose I would have to see the film to see if it all works. Would you say it was a bit arty pretentious Nora?

Its so hard to evaluate his skills since he does mostly shitty movies / bad performances but then surprises with a brilliant one every 4-5 movies or so. I still think he is great, just takes too many jobs with people that cant handle his overacting.

Would you say it was a bit arty pretentious Nora?funny you should say that. I DID think that its :arty pretentious: in the first third of the movie. But then again I think that about most David Lynch movies so be careful about that label with me. but it has genuinely brilliant scenes in the last third of the movie and it has great music throughout so overall I didnt mind the stylization and certain mock philosophy and slowness. Looking back I stay with my 8/10 score. But its Cage and Johansson who drag it up there. Without them this would be silly/uninteresting I think. In a way this is "John Wick if made by early David Lynch". Its a SUPER SIMPLE but super violent and fun revenge story, but focuses on lengthy slow dialogue, distinct colors and weirdness somethings seeming for the sake of weirdness. And since I love revenge porn (as in food porn, demolition porn, sky porn, not actual revenge porno) and enjoy funny gore, this was right up my alley. But I can totally see how people get turned off by its arty pretentiousness. It is there. Especially in the first half. But as soon as you get to the amazing a scene in the bathroom, you are GOOD TO GO for a really good ride!

As someone who loves cinematography and the visual side of films, I love artsy films that just focus on that visual/aesthetic side....but Mandy was so pretentious. And I HATE that word.

It looks a bit superficial to me from the trailer, where as Lynch— I am not referring to his films after Mulholland Drive because I haven't seen them—still had his own stamp of originality, weirdness, depth, substance and I found them compelling. I don't mind longish slower films if the dialog is interesting. Did you find the dialog in Mandy fascinating or was it just superfluous and shallow?

Thats where Lynch is suoerior for sure. The dialogues were pretentious, in my eyes the weakest part of the movie. But - I still liked it a lot overall, because of some honestly brilliant scenes later in the movie where there is much kess talking and more chainsaw battles :-)

I don't think I will bother. Dialog, as in many Lynch, Allen, Tarantino films, has to reflect in the substance\style of the film in order for it to reach intelligent and clever peaks of irony and depth. It has to engage and be clever and while I don't expect this from every film, I usually expect a little bit more from films that are attempting to divert from the typical mainstream formula. It looks like it could be fun and interesting, but also look a bit self-indulgent at the same time.
