I heard this about 30 years ago, that some author did a high school test on his book and was giving a low/failing grade. Can't seem to find anything about who it was, if the story is true.

I heard that. Funny, the thing about book reports is that they focus on reading comprehension (understanding what you read/what the book was really about) an that is largely done with interpretation. I have gotten poor grades on a few book reports because my interpretation of it was not off base but the teacher just plain disagreed.

It sounds like the Rodney Dangerfield movie Back to School when he hires Kurt Vonnegut to write a report on Kurt Vonnegut, and gets an F.

There is a short story from 1954 by Isaac Asimov called "The Immortal Bard." Here is the summary from Wikipedia. Check out the statement from Asimov in the last paragraph. Less than this has started urban legends.
