The first time I heard this song, I was left speechless... She seems like the sweetest lady in the world, but even Edith Massey was more musically inclined than BJ Snowden... In Canada...

Afternoon Delight still makes me cringe, though. Does anyone remember the mercifully brief variety show that The Starland Vocal Band hosted, I'd guess as a result of the song's popularity? I was driving across the country on the summer of 1976 and had to endure hearing that song every hour or so. As for the band's short-lived TV show, it launched David Letterman's career. Some of it was filmed in the Georgetown part of Washington, DC. I disliked the show and thought Letterman was horrendous. Took me a long time to warm up to him.

Free Bird strikes me as an ode to redneck irresponsibility. Imagine some guy out on parole being cuffed for robbing a liquor store: "Lord knows I can't change..."

Billy Squier - Rock Me ToniteThis one isn't the song so much (in fact, I kind of like it), as the music video for it. Billy Squier's dancing and, uh, "prancing" is SO........oh, I don't know.........just watch it yourself, since it kind of falls into the category, 'has to be seen, to be believed' (and btw, to anybody who remembers the syndicated music show Solid Gold (1980-1988), is that by chance his own 'homage' to the Solid Gold dancers that Squier does when he's rolling around on the floor (about the 0:45 mark) ??). The way he freaks out at the end of "Mr. Tambourine Man" makes that one even funnier/scarier.

Aside from the kind of stuff you find on 'Golden Throats' and similar compilations, I was having some difficulty coming up with an example myself. But then yesterday I heard "Dismal Day" by Bread. I'd never knowingly heard it before. It's a clunky enough pop song on its own, but those ridiculous extended falsetto notes the singer throws in elevates it to the almost farcical. EEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

Actually, Third Rate Romance was done by a group called The Amazing Rhythm Aces. Live and learn...I haven't heard the song in a while, and it got stuck in my head back in the day that it was his recording. But I looked it up and you're quite correct. Damned if Russel Smith doesn't sound a good bit like Freddy on it, though. I agree, Russel Smith and Freddy Fender sounded similar.

SAVE FERRIS The legend of "Rock Me Tonight". Supposedly, it ruined Squire's career because people thought he was gay after seeing the video. I remember when the video came out and thought it was cringe inducing. But hundreds of videos were as bad. Journey's "Separate Ways", Pat Benatar's "Shadows of the Night", Styx "Mr Roboto". But I never remember people saying "Did you see the video, Billy Squier is so gay". I remember people saying "Did you see the video, Billy Squire is a douche".

On the flipside, I'd never heard of Billy Squire until someone mentioned that video, so... He got talked about more when "The Stroke" came out. "Dude, he's singing a song about jerking off! hee hee hee". Of course the lyrics don't support that. It's about the music business. It's no "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys", but it's no "I Touch Myself". He was fairly popular in his prime in the early 80's (not my cup of tea) and he did have a steep decline in fortune after "Rock Me Tonight".

Wow.......don't know how I missed all that. Guess that explains why he seemed to suddenly drop off the face of the planet, after having that run of 'hits'. Thanks!
