Thanks for this thread. I find your opinions well thought out and reasoning valid. The only film I haven't seen from your initial list is 1900 but I had mixed feelings about investing the time to watch it. This sealed the deal for me. I've never been a huge fan of Deniro to begin with. I have heard Sutherland's character is over the top as well. I agree with you 100% regarding O'Toole. I've tried so hard to like the films he has been critically acclaimed in. However, outside of Lawrence of Arabia (which is a "10" for me), Lord Jim, and Murphy's War, I just cannot stand most of his films. The Ruling Class is an utter bore, and the Lion in Winter is just a complete waste of time. The Stunt Man, while O'Toole was good in the role, has some serious casting issues. Steve Railsback is still playing Charlie Manson in this film for one thing.
I do have to disagree with one film from your list, that other posters have already taken you to task on. Stalag 17 is a great film. I suggest another viewing. Even if you don't like Holden in the film, Peter Graves as Price is excellent! Don Taylor is good as well as Dunbar.

I suggest another viewing. [1] Kind of you to say so, but I was not trying to do micro-reviews or justify my heresies. Just ruminating on why I am a member of the awkward squad when it comes to those highly respected movies, as much for my own edification as anyone's. [2] As promised elsewhere, this one is down for an early re-watch. I cannot promise anything as I am a miserable, mean-spirited old git who bears grudges and hates to admit he is wrong, but I will give it a go. I am sure you will all say "well, it's his loss".
