If they still do that I'm unaware of it. I haven't seen a modern show do that.
I recall that did use to happen though and it made people mad. There's a used media store where I live and they have old sci-fi shows where one season has multiple volumes containing two or three episodes each.

Later seasons of both Sex and the City and The Sopranos, no surprise, both HBO shows. Those quickly come to mind.
