Nalkarj : I can't say as I like Lady Macbeth and I've taught the play numerous times (actually I avoid teaching it - I prefer others). I, of course, like Anna Karenina but didn't mention as others had beat me too it. Same goes for Jane Eyre (not much for Wuthering Heights). Gotta add Scarlett O'Hara for sheer gumption, the women of Khaled Hosseini's Thousand Splendid Suns, Aminata Diallo from Book of Negroes[published in the US as somebody knows my name]. Also Antigone. Hi, Mmexis. Apologies if my post came off wrong; I was just jumping off your comments, not criticizing them in any way (they're fine choices). As for Lady Macbeth... She's not a likable character, certainly, but I find her very interesting (have ever since I first read a comic-book version of Macbeth in 4th Grade, in fact!). Either way, I suppose I put her on the list because the question was "most famous." Same with Rowling's Hermione Granger, though I'm not all that fond of the character. Antigone, certainly. Good choice. I can't believe I missed the earlier references to the Brontes and Tolstoy. Reading too fast, I suppose. I have read Hosseini's The Kite Runner, which I thought excellent, but I have not yet read A Thousand Splendid Suns. Would you say it's just as good, if not better? Salzmank

Nalkarj: no offense taken. And I was just responding with my thoughts about Lady Macbeth. I agree that she's famous (I've been alternately seeing it as "memorable" as opposed to famous) but I see her as somewhat of a fishwife. If we are going for dignified Shakespeare women we could also include Hermione from A Winter's Tale and Beatrice from All's well that ends well for sheer fun. Although I don't like that play as a whole. I actually liked A Thousand Splendid Sunsmore than Kite Runner. Totally different points of view. Where KR was all male, 1000 splendid was primarily female. I liked And the mountains echoed less although there is a very cool website dedicated to this novel. The site has been shut down, but here's a link to some of what used to be: echo projectPlease don't worry about offending. None was given or taken.

Francie Nolan of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn deserves a spot on the list.
