while some people that grew up in the 80s and have nostalgia for the time don't tend to agree, it seems most people agree that 80s music is terribly dated. With terrible a terrible use of synthesizers and terrible lyrics that don't mean anything Anyone who says this has not listened to much 80's music or has too narrow a focus on the cheesy aspects of the period...

Or... Someone thinks the world revolves around them, and because they don't like 80s music, no one else should, could, etc... It seems to be a very common way of thinking among many young people today... and I'm not sure why... With several billion people living on the planet today, I just don't understand why people just can't accept that all of these people have different tastes and interests from each other... And to repeat myself, My interests ARE different from the OP... I love 80s music!

Yeah, I'd say overall that I do agree with you that the '80s were the worst decade aesthetically. Hair, music, and fashion trends were disgustingly ugly in the '80s.

80's music was the last original era of music. 90's took from the 60's & 70's. 00's took from youtube. 10's took from the garbage can. Huh? What was so original about the '80s? No Wave was an underground protest movement (a terrible one) against New Wave, no different than European underground from the late '60s and '70s. Hip-Hop borrowed from Disco and Gil Scott Heron, House music borrowed from Disco, Indie Rock was back-to-roots Pop/Rock of the '60s, inc. Jangle Pop and other sub genres. Arthur Russell and John Zorn were probably the only creative artists of that decade. I'd say Caravan and Soft Machine were the last original rock musicians ever.

That's a dirty big negative from me. Most folk I know and work with , young, and old wildly and widely say that the music released and created in that decade was a wide, rich, innovative , fun, eclectic cocktail that obviously has held up
We have radio on at work 9 til 9 and about 5 percent (of about 250 folk) want the current churned out pop , every one else...particularly the youngsters want 80's music. 60s and 70s also....but mostly 80s channels.
My youngest daughter is 19 and works in a beach side diner and says the 80's music nights are the best nights of the year. My friends, kids and loved ones have varied tastes in art and music and none of them hold that view. Of course there is some smashing music about now aside from the chart sh*te but just look at any random selection of top twentys from the 60s 70s 80s etc.....and note the percentage of how many songs from them are played today and one recognises.....and how many..........are not.
So is it wideley agreed 80s music is dated and don't hold up? Not that I can see. Who is saying this?

Today's music either steals or samples 80's music, or was created in or has evolved from 80's music, not to mention every era before that.
To not know your history or the roots of a subject is to not know much. You don't have to love it, but you do have to give credit where credit is due.
Even though I love 80's music, once in awhile you will hear certain songs and cringe a little, they are too over produced or have some sleazy or stupid lyrics.

Disagree. I suspect naysayers have been making the same generalization since music could be divided into decades. There's good music from every era that holds up well, and stuff that sounds dated, not to mention stuff you may not like no matter how popular it is.

A wide variety of music was produced in the 90's as well. AND the 2000's.
Of course.
What burns me is someone referring to "80s music" as if it's a genre and everything produced during that decade sounds the same. Metallica, REM, Men Without Hats, the Meat Puppets, INXS, Slayer, the Cars, the Minutemen, Prince, Kate Bush, Dinosaur Jr., the Hoodoo Gurus, Mekons, the Gun Club, the Police, Cocteau Twins, Butthole Surfers, Talking Heads, etc. are all the same genre because they all happened to make music during the 80s. The OP is an idiot.
I probably would shy from assertion that OP is an idiot, as i'm in a good mood and quite rosy in the Blade garden....but to head a post with a question which is fine ...... but to then body the post with a statement/opinion that is obviously crassly generalistic and quite myopic and blinkered..... is a tad silly. Nuff said.

I disagree, but there are things that feel more dated than in the 70s and 60s, partly due to midi-style synth, videos that feel incredibly weak, as well as the garish stylings, mullets, and big hair.
