@homergreg asked me an interesting question recently, and I couldn’t come up with an answer. Basically, we were talking about the actress Rachel McAdams, and I wrote that I think she’d be a good Nora Charles were they ever (God forbid) to remake The Thin Man.
But, when he asked me whom I’d choose for Nick, I just couldn’t come up with anyone—I’m not that great with modern actors anyway, but I just couldn’t think of a single actor I could see in that role. Anyone have a choice you think would work?

A few years ago the entertainment press reported a Thin Man movie in development starring Johnny Depp. I nearly spit coffee through my nose. Sure glad that one never happened. Seriously, the modern actor who can give us a smooth witty personality with more than a large drop of irony is George Clooney.
But casting would not be my major worry. I'm thinking: The Thin Man in today’s Summer Blockbuster movie mind-set?
Is there going to be a noisy car chase? Blowing up a building? A 45-minute action finale with the Bad Guy’s finger on the button about to destroy all of San Francisco (or will it be Los Angeles this time around)?
I think the ability to bring the Thin Man to the screen as we remember it is a lost art.

Am I crazy for thinking George and Cate for Nick and Nora? I think they have what it takes for those roles.

Oh! mikef6 just beat me to it with the Clooney suggestion. Makes me think there's something there.

Oh, I can definitely see it, guys, especially in the picture you posted, jervistetch. @homergreg recommended Clooney as the best option too. It’s just that I see him as more of a Cary Grant type than a William Powell type, if that makes any sense. mikef6, I know, I know. I guess it’s just a thought-experiment. If it had to be done, I’m wondering what the best way would be to do it…

I agree that the team of Clooney & Cate would be perfect.

The C&C's would be better than so many of the current crop who look, sound and act pretty much the same .. these two are old and experienced enough to have some developed some character and both ARE characters … George, especially, does not seem to take himself too seriously and could carry off being Nick … being a bit more laid back, it that were possible. Nalkarj are we talkin; re-doing the original stories or a total modern re-boot ? JUST the originals for moi, thank you very much ! BUT all that aside … another no way ! vote for the project ... just a "what if" scenario !

I mentioned to Homer that I was concerned about modern actors’ being able to carry off the insouciant gaiety of the characters (a gaiety mixed with a toughness for Nick). Yes, just a “what if” scenario, but (I thought) an interesting thought-experiment, especially if some producer decided he just had to remake ‘em. What would be the best possible option, then? I suppose it would be redoing the originals…I certainly couldn’t see it set in modern times.

Clooney came first to mind for me, but not with McAdams. Cate Blanchett is the pair for Clooney, and no doubt they could bring the characters that Hammett created to life the best.
With Rachel McAdams, I was thinking of a modernized version, still being faithful to the tone of the characters. That's when an interesting and risky alternative came to mind. Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
I know that probably sounds weird, but I was thinking of Brick and the job he did in that film back 13 years ago. He was, in his mid 20's, one heck of a hard-boiled high schooler. Now in his late thirties, I could see him playing a little younger Nick to McAdams' Nora.
And Brick is the best modern time homage to Hammett's work I know of.
I know it's out there, but lol, I doubt anything is going to happen there anyway.

Does Cate have a softer rather silly side to her ? I have only seen her being rather serious and in control of situations. Nora always seems to be seeing the funny in what Nick is up to and rather egging on his goffyness.

Paltrow might be someone who would be a contender though now that you mention that aspect.

@homergreg I like the idea of Paltrow .. she has that somewhat giddy quality … cannot imagine Cate doing that entrance in the first Thin Man with Asta and all the packages. BUT she is an actor who seems able to do anything so.... maybe ! NOT Meryl Streep... please !

I usually don't pay much attention to the ages of actors compared to other actors or the real-life characters, but (which means I'm going to go ahead and do it anyway), Loy was about 29 when the first Thin Man was released. If the new film went into pre-production this year, Gwyneth would be nearing 50 at the premiere. Let's just say that Meryl is another 20 years older than Paltrow. Maybe Streep could be the mother of Nora and could enter the film during the last 10 minutes to solve the baffling murder mystery. No? OK, NO! You don't have to holler.

mikef6 golly gee we have to make at least one movie a year without Ms Meryl … and they're European-accent-less characters so what could she do with it Oscar-wise ? Gwyneth … young up and comer Gwyneth ? nearing 50 ? Say it isn't so !

How about Sienna Miller or Mackenzie Davis as well.

You are not looking for a scene for scene remake of the 1934 movie? I hope not.
Since it's been a trend with "begins", just a thought, how did they fall in love, what case were they working on? Do we see Asta as a puppy?
