Aj_June Yorkshire is a really tough accent to decipher unless of course, you are from Yorkshire ! Yep, there are words that I completely missed. It is tough to pick in entirety but the tone seems very cool.

movieliker Seems that Carmel thing really bugs you .. which is fine. BUT
It's a regional and / or cultural thingy … not stupidity same with SHERBIT being pronounced sher-bert ! May be technically incorrect … but pronouncing things differently does not necessarily equate to being stupid or ignorant. IMO … not trying to argue .. expressing my opinion, as you have also done... That is terrific. So if I want to pronounce Lisa as Fred --- that's an interesting regional difference? No, it is wrong and stupid. You don't want to judge anybody because you don't want to be judged yourself. Sorry, pronouncing caramel as carmel is just wrong and stupid. No. Just no. I’d never call you stupid because I’ve never met you in person and can’t and won’t presume. But, apropos of being objectively wrong, you’re just objectively wrong on this. Also, I have to say, if you think this is fungible or comparable with saying Lisa as Fred, you’ve never studied linguistics. Or even just thought about your sentence all that much. Think before you post.

Those articles only point out regional differences in pronunciation. They don't say which are grammatically correct.

REPLY #2 . . . and soda and pop are spelled differently. Caramel and Carmel are two different words with two different spellings --- and two different pronunciations.

And then there was the time when Catsister was confused by a guy from Boston who said, "When Bill parties, he really parties!"

movielikerAhem: Sounds familiar, somehow… Accepted. The OED allows the British /ˈkarəmɛl/, /ˈkarəm(ə)l/, /ˈkarm̩(ə)l/ and the U.S. /ˈkɑrməl/, /ˈkɛrəməl/, /ˈkɛrəˌmɛl/. Merriam-Webster has the first pronunciation as /ˈkɑrməl/. This is indisputable. So why are we still having this discussion? (Yes, I’m soliloquizing here.)

Accepted and grammatically correct are two different things. 200 years ago it was accepted blacks and women were seen and treated as second class citizens without Constitutional Rights in America. Accepted and correct are two different things.

And then there was the time when Catsister was confused by a guy from Boston who said, "When Bill parties, he really parties!” Those wacky Bostonians also get looks from out-of-towners (a designation which would probably include myself, as I’ve only been here for a few years) when they walk their dogs. Also! Forgetting one’s car keys in one’s khakis!

You can call me stupid if you want to. But caramel and carmel are two different words with two different spellings --- and with two different pronunciations. No one is calling you stupid .. stubborn maybe but not stupid. CARMEL the city is not under discussion . CARAMEL the candy / topping IS and that word CAN and IS properly pronounced as either CAR-MEL or CAR-A-MEL.
These are also called Carnival apples... a yummy by any other name is delicious!

And Catman will save a place for you. They're having chocolate pudding for desert with lunch, so make sure you show up on time.

Salzmank beat me to that video post. Movieliker seems to be having a bad day,.. he's usually cool and a pleasure to talk with... quirky but then who is not ? . He has officially lost me with dragging in the accepted and correct thingy and Fred and Lucy ...and thinking that caramel is a matter of grammar … as we know it's purely pro-noun-see-a-tun ! official glazed eyes so … ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh chocy pudd.... yay Catman 猫的主人 may I come too ? I promise not to tease about the "desert" ….
