I don't want to play parents here but I suggest that it would be best if we just moved on from this topic. At this point of time a reading of the thread is enough to indicate what arguments people have made for their opinions. If it continues then people may reveal more about personal traits of their character which isn't a good thing to do on message boards. In any case the thread did inform me of new things and I enjoyed some of the posts. This is my last post on this thread.

You guys are hypocrites. You accuse me of being obsessed with the incorrect pronunciation of caramel. But it was you three who continue to disagree and argue about it. Seems like a clear case of projection.

It was kinda fun! Not my usual behavior, and I haven't even been drinking... yet... So it's my last post, too, AJ. (ps, 51)

Well...it looks like you finally made that one mature post which looks like the final say on the matter. It seems like the vice-chancellor himself decided to put the matter to rest. I am pretty sure at least now this issue should end. Excellent post BTW, doghouse. Then there's crow.
Also, pour, sour, dour.
Learning how to pronounce a word such as weight would be of no use when it comes to the word height.
It never ends!
The English language is dire need of a "metric system" style overhaul.

The English language is dire need of a "metric system" style overhaul. Benjamin Franklin proposed such a system in his A Scheme for a new Alphabet and a Reformed Mode of Spelling published in 1768. Never really took off.

Never really took off. That's a shame. I imagine it would be way to difficult to even attempt. I know language and spelling rules have been slowly built up over many years of tradition but language is a system and in an ideal world systems, if nothing else should be formal, consistent and logical.

I have the right to disagree with whatever sources you provide links to. I don't think you have provided a link to God. All and any links you or others have provided links to are man made. There opinion is no more valuable than mine. 49, do I hear 50? What's your opinion of workers or prospective workers who do not/cannot distinguish between "their" (which would have been the correct choice in this context) and "there" (which is the incorrect choice)? Evidently you're ( NOT "your") not as picky about correct spelling and word choice as you are about pronunciation. Speaking of which, it drives me crazy when people use the last word in my second sentence, and pronounce it as "pro-NOUN-see-ay-shun". Nope. It's "pro-NUN-see-ay-shun"; there is no "pronoun" in that word. Illogical? You betcha. If you want to complain about the illogical and inconsistent aspects of the English language, feel free to start a separate thread. I'll be there with bells on. (Hmm, looks like yet another thread idea: "Cliches That Drive Me Crazy"! )

There was one sorta like that there recently but it was along the line of "sayings that make no sense". Sadly, several of them made no sense because the posters were aware of only half of the saying.

Also I am on a smartphone. The buttons are small. And the spellcheck often changes what I write to something wrong. I know the correct times to use their and there. But between my big fingers on small buttons, this erroneous spellcheck, and posting fast and furious, sometimes mistakes go unchecked.

To channel, paraphrase (whatever) the deranged school teacher played by James Mason in Nick Ray's Bigger Than Life regarding his plan to kill his son, no not as we know from the Old Testament: Spellcheck Is Wrong! Or rather, it can be. I've noticed this many times, with legitimate, dictionary corroborations, on-line and off. Spellcheck is not the last word, the final answer, as to how to spell a word correctly. It favors American spelling practices; nor does it allow for variations. It's often weak where scientific words are concerned, or anything obscure or arcane. Also, if one is or was an inveterate reader of older books, studies, surveys, textbooks and such, published much before 1940, it's a revelation what was permitted (as to spelling, I mean) even in the States, as to not only spelling but grammar as well. There's really no "last word" when it comes to spelling, only the prevailing view in the moment, which could change in the next moment.

I once got into an argument with my mom over whether the first syllable of "bourgeois" is pronounced boo or bore.
