I hate to be so negative, but the moment it was announced this film would be made for 150 million with a third rate director for hire (known for cheesy family films and cheap Indiana Jones rip-offs) and a committee of writers for hire and a b-movie action star (although it's one I personally love) it was clear this production could only go one way.
The project already shows all the signs of corporate filmmaking at its worst. Bummer, really, because with a budget around 40-80 million this could have worked perfectly and actually allowed (a talented filmmaker) to take certain risks and make a great, kick-ass genre film instead of an anemic product. The way I see it, 'Meg' is already marked for extinction (the species really deserved better this time round). Sad as it is, this toothless fish will go belly up.

Monster movies are enjoying a comeback at this moment so it's not impossible that MEG can ride that wave.

It's got something to do with China in it right? Jason Statham is pretty popular over there. It'll probably make a good amount over there.
It could flop though.

Thought it was going to be a Family Guy spin-off.

I believe that new "it girl" Jing Tian is in this like in Kong: Skull Island. If not then it's not a big loss for her. She's banging some bigwig in the Chinese film industry so she gets all theses big budget movie roles.

We'll have to wait and see the box office results.

You tell me "Jason Statham vs. a giant shark" and I'm there opening day.
But then my thumb is very rarely on the pulse of general audiences.

True, and that's of course exactly the kind of audience this film is after. Problem is, you need a good script and a good director to make this kind of film.

I think it looks great. I enjoyed the source material, so, I can't wait to see this.

I checked and it is a monster ovi,e a shark one...I thought it was an adapation of the books about a 12 year old Nancy Drew, Meg..(1967-72, repulbished 1978)., Or Meg Griffin as someone else mentioned or Meg Ryan or Meghan Trainor.

My biggest issue with this movie is that they cast Jason Statham as the lead. I'm sorry but did the makers of this movie even read the book? Jonas Taylor is not supposed to be a gruff type of guy, he's more of the obvious thinker type who would rather use his brains instead of his fist. Seriously, the fact that its a giant shark should be enough to put butts into the theater, no need to get Jason Statham.

‘The Meg’ Is a Surprise Box-Office Monster
By Brooks Barnes Aug. 12, 2018
LOS ANGELES — Going into the weekend, “The Meg” looked like a big, fat belly flop for Warner Bros.
Surveys indicated minimal interest in the killer shark movie, which cost at least $200 million to make and market. Rival studios snickered that Warner’s new marketing chief had made a rookie mistake in backing “The Meg” with a campy ad campaign: Make a joke of your own noncomedic movie, the Hollywood conventional wisdom holds, and ticket buyers will stay home.
Guess who is getting the last laugh? “The Meg,” a brassy, brainless, computer-generated mishmash, took in $44.5 million at North American theaters — roughly 120 percent more than most analysts had expected. “The Meg” collected an additional $97 million overseas, with China contributing half of that total.
“The Meg” was co-financed and co-produced by Gravity Pictures, a Chinese company, and designed to sell tickets in China. The movie co-stars a Chinese actress, Li Bingbing, and the 70-foot shark at its center threatens a crowded Chinese beach in one action sequence. “The Meg” stars Jason Statham and was directed by Jon Turteltaub, whose last big-budget movie was the 2010 flop “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.”
“The Meg” represents an important success for Blair Rich, who took over as Warner’s president of worldwide marketing in April amid a broader management shake-up at the studio, which is now owned by AT&T and has struggled with whipsawing box-office results in recent years. Ms. Rich and her team took a risk in advertising “The Meg” as a joke — winking at potential ticket buyers with a campy trailer starring a Yorkie with a pink bow and featuring silly music. Its tagline: “Pleased to Eat You.”
