I absolutely love the Lethal Weapon films: they're an excellent example how to combine light and dark, comedy and grit, edge and fun: great acting and sharp dialogue. To me, that's simply the best kind of popcorn entertainment: because it does everything to keep you entertained while refusing to be dumb.
Current action tentpoles (Logan and Deadpool excluded) would do well to try to learn from Lethal Weapon; this series addresses a whole range of issues - among them race and illegal immigration, post traumatic stress, depression and suicide - but they always feel organic to the story and are neither shoved down your throat nor PC.
The series also shows what advantages the freedom of an R-rating provides in the hands of a good director and a good screenwriter. The R-rated elements like violence, nudity and swearing are omnipresent and vital ingredients in all the Lethal Weapon films, but they always serve the charaters and the story; they never feel gratuitous.
Oh how I wish contemporary blockbusters tried to learn from Lethal Weapon: this was simply unsanitized popcorn filmmaking at its best.
