I am very curious.
I was under the impression that most people considered these movies psychological thrillers with horror aspects, rather than full horror movies.
I do NOT consider them horror movies and my reasoning is simple - because I don't get the same feel when I watch these films as I do when I watch movies I consider to be horror.
Is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo a horror movie or Zodiac or Kiss the Girls? This is where my confusion comes in, because I see all 5 movies as the exact same genre but I never hear anyone refer to those 3 as horror movies.

It's more disturbing than most horror movies, but no, I consider it more of a thriller, just like The Silence of the Lambs.

I am asking, because I don't want to be biased when I make my 1995 horror movie poll. Like 'Silence of the Lambs' it is debatable. If you think it is add to the list. I can certainly see why they are looked at as horror.

Not really. More of a psychological thriller. with elements of horror - particularly Se7en. I never bought the argument that Silence of the Lambs is a horror movie.

Maybe, but some people claim some movies are horror when it's clearly not. sort of like the Western genre... some might claim No Country for Old Men (2007) is a "Western", as they have a bit of Western dress etc, but is not a true Western as when I think 'Western' I tend to think the old days with horses/old revolvers from 1800's etc, basically the movies that are clear cut Westerns.
with that said... I would not have much issue with someone calling Se7en a bit of a thriller as I would say it's more thriller than horror for sure.

That isn't my point. My point was only in your use of imdb as a reference point. We just have a disagreement here then. The Silence of the Lambs and Se7en are first and foremost psychological thrillers for me. Definition of Psychological thriller.Psychological thriller is a thriller story which emphasizes the psychology of its characters and their unstable emotional states. ... Psychological thrillers often incorporate elements of mystery, drama, action, and horror, particularly psychological horror. They are usually books or films.

I consider them to be thrillers.
I think they wind up on Horror lists for their use of gore fx.

Defining Horror seems to be a subjective issue, and therefore inevitably problematic. Narratively, I call those movies detective thrillers, or thematically, psychological thrillers.
Otherwise, it's a matter of choice I suppose, rather than intellectual debate...but I do loathe the term 'horror elements', which sounds like a cop out compromise. (particularly when those so called 'horror elements' are not defined by the user, and the term becomes meaningless.)

(particularly when those so called 'horror elements' are not defined by the user, and the term becomes meaningless.) Horror elements - scenes that are meant to be scary, gothic horror set decoration, gore (particularly wearing another person's face) etc. The Silence of the Lambs uses Roger Corman horror elements throughout and even casts him in the movie. George Romero also has a cameo. Though when it comes to Se7en the only scene I consider horror-eque is the sloth victim. I don't see it as a cop out, just a more detailed description. Ie. Minority Report is a sci-fi movie with action scenes, Bad Boys is an action movie that uses a lot of comedy etc.
