Yeah, except I saw COWBOYS in a preview before its general release. The audience was struck stone cold silent in shock.

SANDS OF IWO JIMA was the one which surprised me most. By the time I saw THE COWBOYS it was well known that the dastardly Dern back-shot him. The Duke gets it as he lights up the cigarette. Should have been the first sign to him that smoking is hazardous to your health. John Wayne had coffee cups made to give cast and crew something to remember the film by. The cup would have a logo and film title on one side and "Good Luck from John Wayne" on the other. I have one from "The Green Berets" that was donated to my high school for an auction to raise money for scholarships. The Duke may have attended ny high school, but didn't graduate from there, but his brother Robert Morrison did and he is the one who made the donation. They also asked for items for their Hall of Fame at the same time, and actress Laraine Day donated a silver train locomotive that had been given to her by Wayne as a remembrance of a film they made together called "Tycoon." He must have been the sentimental type of guy.
