3/10 - They came up with a great idea for a movie, and then did nothing with it.

scared me when i went to the theater to see it, on the way home crossing the small patch of woods to my house was the worst. since then i haven't really ever been scared from a movie.

Great horror movie that was one of the first to use viral buzz to perfection. I saw it with several people the day it opened who thought it was all true. I didn't spoil it for them. Now that it has been ripped off ad nauseam, people who watch it for the first time may not be as impressed. Even when it was released, people who need jump scares to alert them when to feel uneasy or scared didn't like it much.
The Sy Fy channel aired a "documentary" the day before the movie was released called The Curse of the Blair Witch. It was a brilliant way to get more people to see the movie and in some ways it was even creepier than The Blair Witch Project.

Its all very well done.

Its all very well done. That's sort of an odd coincidence. It reminds me of one I had with that same show. I bought Curse and several other dvds that were in a 5 for $10 bin. I watched Curse with some friends and then popped in Horror Hotel next. A clip from that movie was featured in Curse under the title The City of the Dead. I had no clue about the connection and it spooked the hell out of the people I was watching them with.

The Sy Fy channel aired a "documentary" the day before the movie was released called The Curse of the Blair Witch. It was a brilliant way to get more people to see the movie and in some ways it was even creepier than The Blair Witch Project. To be perfectly honest, I prefer The Curse of the Blair Witch to The Blair Witch Project. I find the movie very overrated--I posted a link to Andrew Sarris's hilarious review elsewhere on this forum, and I largely agree with it--but the idea, the concept, the marketing are all fantastic, and on that basis I believe the "documentary" is more effective, more adept at selling the idea, than the actual movie. (It's actually more like Ghostwatch, a major [and, IMO, superior] inspiration for Blair Witch's filmmakers, than the movie.) Like you, Poelzig, I also find it creepier. P.S. I generally dislike numerical polling/rating like this--I don't believe criticism should be this reduced, constraining, or simplistic--but I gave The Blair Witch Project 3/10 here. I don't believe that that means anything, but, since everyone else posted his/her rating out of 10, I might as well join in.

I'm in the US so I only have experienced Ghostwatch years later on youtube. It was still enjoyable and spotting "pipes" was suitably unnerving. I would have loved to have seen it live especially since I was more or less naïve enough when it first aired to maybe been fooled for at least a little while.
Did you see it live by any chance? On the old site I asked and was told numerous entertaining stories from people who were spooked and even terrified by the show. That would have been so much fun.

Oh, Lord, no. Wish I did! I'm American too, so I never even had that chance. Still, even knowing that it wasn't real, I thought it a great TV movie, very scary and well-plotted (that moment it looks like everything is OK on the monitor is absolutely brilliant). And the fact that Stephen Volk (the writer) created a skeptic character to balance out everything the parapsychologist was saying--that was ingenious for a ghost movie, which hardly ever does that. (I think it's more effective in this respect than The X-Files's skeptic-believer dichotomy as well, because you never believe Scully's skeptical explanation for a minute, whereas this guy--what's his name?--I just looked it up, "Dr. Sylvestri"--says what a skeptic would actually say in real life). Still one of my favorite ghost movies of all time.

Still one of my favorite ghost movies of all time. It's a testament to how effective it was that the BBC received thousands of calls and complaints about Ghostwatch and it was not repeated in the UK for a decade. Much like Orson Welles infamous War of the Worlds radio broadcast, a lot of viewers tuned in after the show had started and missed any indication it was a drama not a documentary.
Many of the viewers were kids home alone. I remember one guy from IMDb saying he and his younger brother bolted all the doors and windows and made dozens of homemade crosses to protect them from the ghosts. How awesome is that?

1/ 10 only because there is no lower rating available.
One of the absolute worst waste of time films I have ever had the misfortune of experiencing.
No script. No actors. Everything just barely visible. Ed Wood at his worst is an Oscar deserving genius compared to this mess.

4/10 I remember the hype surrounding the film when it came out, but beside some creepy moments, I never became a fan. Last year I decided to see if it could change my mind, as I had not seen it since 2003, and it was pretty much the same feeling afterwards. Not my kind of a horror film.

I wanted to like it and there are a few spooky parts but overall it was disappointing. I gave it 4/10

Too hyped, too vague. I've never been a fan of the genre, so a 5 for me.

And isn't it funny how we've filtered it into the "love it or hate it" paradigm without (I think) trying to do so? I mean, the lead is 8/10, and the runner-up is 3/10! So all of us pretty much love or hate Blair Witch Project. Quite curious.
Perhaps these polls/ratings out of 10 have more meaning than I gave them credit for.
