5/10 It worked better as drama than horror.

3/10. Not complete crap; there is a slight bit of merit to the first, faux-documentary section. But the lost-in-the-woods stuff, throught the end, is pretty much complete crap.
I pretty much categorically hate that shot on camcorders/smart phones/etc. faux documentary/faux verite/faux found footage look with respect to cinematography. Aesthetically it's really ugly in my opinion.
On top of that, the improv in the lost in the woods section kind of sucks, the acting is often bad, and the characters are frequently morons.

Has anyone seen Blair Witch (2016)? God, what a waste.

Sir_Farty_FartsalotIt’s laughably terrible. I’m no fan of the original but the 2016 one makes the original look like the pinnacle of cinema in comparison.

A nice idea and a good movie in consideration of the means, but still only 5/10 (still a "pass").

I find it hilarious and absolutely fitting how diametric that 1st and 2nd place are to each other. It’s very much a “love it or hate” sort of film.

5/10 after watching this again late last year. Without rather effective final minutes in the empty house it would have been 4/10. Found footage is good when it's good, I don't dislike the genre unlike many others. However it is true that this style of horror has resulted in a lot of worthless movies since any no-talent can make one. Curse of the Blair Witch is indeed much better than the movie it was made to promote. Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 was really bad. I have no interest in seeing the latest one.

A solid late night October watch... alas, hasn't aged all that great. B B+ watched it tonight after bingeing on MCU for a couple weeks. I needed to throw myself into something way away from bright & shiny. The idea of it trying to pretend as found footage is of course a train that left the station years ago now. However, it still excels for me as a what if - what would I do/how would I react if - scenario. There's some solid moments that never get old - like Mike dreading in the night asking if it's please almost 5am or dawn, only to find out it's only f'n 3am. That's a real dread in peril, when your imagination takes over without any control over the environment. I've been camping plenty of times & you can imagine such crazy dread if you allow it. Like the loud falling/breaking branches noises or rocks being thrown in the middle of the f'n night. I'd f'n murder someone lols. Or stumbling along something trying to portray supernatural like the stick figures. Of course there are aspects to the actual movie which test the limits of how I'd react. If there was a f'n gaggle of night stalkers harassing my tent... I'm goin' double fisting with a couple f'n knives & raging out like a f'n hurricane on anyone & everyone in my way lols. Not running for a few yards like in the movie. I can't fault the film's execution after learning so much about it - the townsfolk interviews are cast & crew, I'd always hoped they at least hired locals for fun... their back packs & tenting were always props - their gear was just part of costume if you will (I think there are goofs about items added/missing) + they should've had the 3 actors camping & struggling for real instead of pretending that much. The real genuine kicker though for those not in the know - The Blair Witch Project debuted cold at Sundance, without any info whatsoever, prior to all its online marketing & hype. Can you f'n imagine... Park City Utah in the middle of nowhere, being dealt that viewing with its premise & concept... that's an audience react that would be at 10 million youtube views right now.
