I use it until I can't possibly use it any longer. Then the remainder I try to "meld" with a new bar. If that doesn't work, I throw the remainder out. I wouldn't put it down the drain, because we've had a lot of problems with clogged drains over the years, sometimes to the point of it being a nightmare for a day or two, where we haven't been able to use the shower (we only have one at home) as the landlord's flunkies try to fix it, etc. I wouldn't want to do anything that would promote hair coagulating more than it already does.

No it's not. it saves in opportunity cost and additional water costs/waste as I have to spend more time getting soap out of a sliver.

I think about liquefying it into a soap solution so as to avoid waste. Just have to figure out how.

I use it until I can't possibly use it any longer. Me too, to a certain degree. Until it annoys me due to constantly slipping out of my hands. Ahh, that's what I meant by squash. I was trying to think of the right word. But yeah, that's what I do too. But soap melts. Does it really cause clogging problems? I never throw mine out.

How much waste are we talking that I would have to have a misshapen bar of soap in order to avoid guilt. What if I switch soaps?

Re "melting," it doesn't do that instantaneously. Our drains have been so sensitive that I'd be worried that while it's "melting," it's blocking the drain just enough that the hair going down the drain will more likely form a clump . . . and then the hair isn't going to "melt" and we'll sooner have a problem again.

Take it to work and put it in the coffee pot when nobody is looking.

Save the pieces in a jar … add HOT (boiling ) water . Shake the jar. Let sit for a while ...it will turn into a liquid soap. Stick to one kind of soap per jar. Ivory works great.

I have not used bar soap in years.
that hair+body pump soap is what I have been using for years now for washing my hair/body with a washcloth. hell, there is basically less waste using pump soap vs bar soap.

Mashing it down the drain will totally not end badly....

I don't use bars of soap anymore. (I use body washes and facial cleansers in a tube and a hand wash in a pump bottle) But when I did use a bar of soap, I tossed it when it was too small. It doesn't lather when it's that small and doesn't feel like it cleans well at that point.
