Currently at 27% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics Consensus: Venom's first standalone movie turns out to be like the comics character in all the wrong ways - chaotic, noisy, and in desperate need of a stronger attachment to Spider-Man.

Not surprised. I like the character, but thinking general audiences would care for an entire movie about him without Spider-man is foolish.

I'm not surprised at all.
I was hoping for the best, but expecting the worst based on the trailers.
I was skeptical of the idea from the get go actually. I just didn't see how the movie would work without Spider-Man, considering in the comic books Eddie Brock always gets the symbiote AFTER Peter Parker. This is why Venom has the Spider-Man eye shaping and the big white spider symbol on his chest. He does not have the white spider on his chest in this movie.
Then they decided to go back on the R-Rating, which really made me lose hope.

Would've been fine within the MCU. Even if it was indirect. No one wants these mailed in for the title jobs.

Not surprising at all (considering the trailers have been absolute garbage with terrible cgi) It is a damn shame the way SONY botched this .

Looks enjoyable...I’ve never been the biggest fan of Venom. I feel like he’s a solid villain but writers always want to make him an antihero.

I was never actually interested in watching it because I just don't care about the character all that much, but I am kind of surprised that the filmmakers seem to have bungled it so badly.

Not surprised per se. I had some hope that it would be good though. Venom himself does look cool. I'm certainly a tad disappointed.

No. I think it was a bad idea to make 'Venom' the first movie in the Sony Spiderverse over Spider Woman or SpiderGwen. I know far more comic book fans that like SpiderGwen than Venom and have no doubt SpiderGwen would have been a far more successful movie with the right actress.
