Reading about the Hinterkaifeck murders and Dyatlov Pass is unsettling actually.

Anything about the more infamous serial killers like H.H. Holmes, Jack the Ripper, and there's a new one I'm reading that's utterly chilling called The Man from the Train. It's related to the Villisca Axe murders.

Countess Bathóry is truly gruesome. Of course I’ll also agree with politicidal on Holmes and Jack, and with you on Hinterkaifeck. Just saying, for pure evil and horror, there is, of course, the Holocaust.

Yes, whatever was behind the Dyatlov Pass "Incident" does seem to be a very scary phenomenon to encounter... I would never want to encounter the evil psychopath that murdered Elizabeth Short AKA "The Black Dahlia"... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Dahlia

bump for even crazier 2021 updates. WP air force went into stand down mode as preparation for fully engaged warfare... i.e. Soviet sorties suddenly stopped over Europe, & NATO if I'm reading correctly was getting legit worried about that being a sign of inevitable combat. It's weird reading about this stuff as if it's fearful news, when the facts were merely classified all these years - the events haven't changed or suddenly altered the course of history, we've simply not realized the extent of things until decades later.

The Khamar Daban Incident. A modern day Dyatlov Pass incident, but this time with a survivor. Her account of what went down is frightening.
One of the most disturbing things I've ever read was something about a Soviet scientist who accidently infected himself with Marburg Virus in 1988. He was isolated and monitored until his ultimate death. They then determined that the virus had a lethality of 97%. They took lung tissue samples, isolated a particular strain that could be turned into a biological weapon, placed these samples into vials and sent them off to labs in various other Warsaw Pact nations. To this day, no one knows what became of those vials.

Aside from the obvious horrors of the 20th Century? The Armenian Genocide, The Holodomor, The Holocaust? One I learned about not too long ago en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jasenovac_concentration_campThe Croats at Jasenovac were brutal. That place might have been worse than Auschwitz or Treblinka

I'm bumping this one. I learned about Jasenovac many years ago thanks to Youtube's recommendations, never heard of it before, went down to the library, checked the entire WWII section, not one damn thing. THE biggest concentration camp, think they said it was the size of 6 other camps put together, 800,000 prisoners, only 80 people survived it, and NOBODY remembers it.

I read a few books about the Holocaust in the past and I never heard of Jasenovac until I stumbled across it in Wikipedia. Detailed, well written book about the camps and not one mention of it. I knew about the Ustase and that the Croats mistreated the Serbs after Yugoslavia but not to that degree. And it falls through the crack of history because it's not really part of the Holocaust. Not many Jews were massacred at Jasenovac. Sad to say but a lot of atrocities from the Second World War are somewhat triviliazed, Unit 731, Jasenovac, Nanking, except when Iris Chang's book came out.
