'Dillinger' is a crime biopic about notorious bank robber John Dillinger and his gang who are hunted down by G-Man Melvin Purvis who serves as narrator. Michelle Phillips of harmony group The Mamas & The Papas gets her first major role here having appeared in Dennis Hopper's 'The Last Movie' (1971). Writer-director John Milius captures The Great Depression with fierce intensity but there's mordant humour to the bank robbers' violent escapades.
'The Ballad Of John Dillinger' - Billy Grammer
John Milius invited a fiery cast of character actors to shine by putting together an ensemble of talented but affordable support players. 'Dillinger' is followed by two television movies directed by Dan Curtis : 'Melvin Purvis : G-Man' (1974) and 'The Kansas City Massacre' (1975).

"The most recent version of the story was Michael Mann's Public Enemies, where Johnny Depp was Dillinger and Christian Bale played g-man Purvis."
- wmcclain
I just couldn't get past the digital look of this picture. Michael Mann's a fine crime director so I shall give it another look at some point. Thanks.

I watched it a few months ago. Oates has a Bogey feeling to him.
Dreyfuss is memorable as Baby Face Nelson.
I didn't see Public Enemies because I heard bad things about the digital photography.

According to movie legend, a lot of young movie directors like Steven Spielberg, Francis Coppola, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, Michael Cimino and Brian De Palma saw 'Dillinger' and said of Richard Dreyfuss (paraphrasing), "Who the hell is this guy? This dude is nuts!"

From all I've read about Nelson, he was a very hot tempered psychopath. I don't see Nelson taking kindly to being slapped around.

Little Bohemia Lodge, Manotowish Waters, Wisconsin"One of the neatest things about Little Bo are the bullet holes to the right of the big dining area.” “As a bonus, you get to see the place where John Dillinger slipped away from the FBI--it was featured in the movie Public Enemies with Johnny Depp.”
Site of John Dillinger and the Dillinger Gang's epic shootout with the F.B.I., the Lodge is also the modern day filming location for the Universal Studios film starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger, PUBLIC ENEMIES. Known for great food and drink since the 1920's! Step back in history at the Lodge, and remember...DILLINGER ONLY LEFT BECAUSE HE HAD TO!!!
In 1934, at the Little Bohemia Lodge on Little Star Lake, the FBI and Dillinger Gang were involved in a shootout, which resulted in the accidental shooting death of one local Civilian Conservation Corps worker and severely injuring two other workers by federal agents who mistook them for members of the gang. Agent W. Carter Baum was also shot and killed by Baby Face Nelson in a brief gunfight a short distance away, which resulted in another special agent and a local constable being wounded. All six members of the gang escaped the incident unharmed. The lodge, then owned by Emil Wanatka, remains in existence as a restaurant today without lodging. Bullet holes in the building's siding and windows from the shootout are still visible. Personal items left behind by the hasty departure of the Dillinger Gang members have been preserved and are on display. In the summer of 2008, the Little Bohemia Lodge was used in the filming of a re-creation of these events in the 2009 Michael Mann film Public Enemies, a movie about Dillinger and the FBI starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger and Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis.

Speaking of Baby Face Nelson, I thought Mickey Rooney did a spot on portrayal of Nelson as a totally whacked out nut job with a sub machinegun.
But Oates and Ben Johnson along with Dreyfus made a very good film. The make up for Oates was remarkable and it channeled Dillinger's appearance to a T.

Yes. I've seen the '73 film, the Rod Serling documentary "The last days of John Dillenger" from the show "Appointment with destiny", and "Public enemies",
I remember not liking "Public Enemies" much. But it's probably time for a re-watch. Rod Serling narrating the "last days" was perfection.

Solid film, and Oates is one of the great undervalued character actors who had leading man qualities that were seldom used as effectively as in this.

amyghost Oates had leading man acting ability but that wonderfully "character actor" face didn't work the way Bogart's had ! . Youngish Warren

eh, it all felt like bells and whistles as well. Also Purvis never killed Dillinger at all. The performances are sublime, and some of the action is interesting, but the script needed massive work as well.
