I struggle with the Dawn remake. I think it all unravels too quickly, the acting is weak in comparison to Romero's original and the lines are delivered very nonchalantly. This is Zack Snyder's fault. He is not a very good director with actors. The same problem was had with Justice League. There are some good sequences in the Dawn remake, namely the opening, but after that, it just becomes pretty routine. There was not much novelty value behind the shopping center setting and they didn't do the cool things they did in the original. With the exception of Sarah Polley, I didn't like any of the other characters. In the original, they managed to make it creepy with the scenario and set up of why the felt the dead were coming back to life and why the zombies were attracted to the shopping center. This theme was just randomly announced out of the blue by Ving Rhames character, without any strength or skill of narrative build up towards it.
I have seen all three cuts of the original, with Argento's being my least favorite. It was a snappier cut, but I missed some of the scenes he took out and I also missed some of Romero's music cues. I prefer the longer cut, because I think it really works well for what the film intended to do and I am always intrigued. It is a classy cut and I usually like the tighter edits.
