I say biased not to say I want to bash any person or company. I truthfully say biased because everyone has a bias to some degree. (I know even critics )
Forward:
I figure if this post is going to be as long as a novel it should have a forward like a novel. Leave me alone I am very freaking bored. I figured this would kill some time. I am currently in the waiting room of my local ER. Don't worry I'm not hurt. My brother has a kidney stone and he needed a ride. We've been waiting for about 2 hours. I've had kidney stones before at this very ER I know this is going to take a while. They give you strong shit for kidney stones. I'm his ride because his family is out of town. So I'm sitting here on my phone typing this out. I can't get the mobile app to work, so I'm doing this through the browser which makes it more tedious. I just realized how utter-freaking-sureal the time line of Nolanites vs DCEU vs MCU vs XMU war is. This comes from someone who is kind of on the outside looking in. I am a fan of MCU, most of the Xmu, most of Nolan's movies, and a couple of DCEU movies.
The Beginning:
The first time I was introduced to the maelstrom that is those fandoms was some time before the Avengers hit big and just after TDKR was released. I sauntered into IMDB thinking it would be fun discussing the movies. I was right and wrong. It was fun, but disturbing too. I had Nolan fans bitching at me on IMDB because I liked BB better than TDK. I also drew the ire of them when I told them my problems with TDKR. Heaven forbid I not like it unconditionally. I was a fan of Nolan just not a Nolanite.
A Bargain with an Enemy:
Then it seems the Nolanites and the XMU guys called a truce long enough to bash MCU and MCU fans together. The XMU fans ignored Wolverine Origins, praised First Class, laughed at Captain America's box office, and when Avengers came out compared it to Transformers. The DCEU fans helped in this. The flaws in The Amazing Spiderman was played down, by this alliance. Followed by blowing up the bait and switch of Ironman 3, tearing apart of Thor 2, the vitriol that oozed because MCU some how made GotG a success. In the mean time Nolanites and XMU couldn't say anything about the 3rd act problems of The Wolverine or how good The Winter Soldier was; because of how good DoFP was. I would get every other post liked or hated by XMU fans, Nolanites, Sony fans, and MCU fans weren't complicit either. I would get called basically a traitor for having positive thoughts on non mcu movies. The MCU fanatics would tell me that I was giving ammo for the enemy to use.
A Man for All Seasons:
Lo' and behold Man of Steel is issued forth from cold dark space. Man of Steel had huge buzz about it. The Man that brought us the Dark Knight trilogy hand picked the Director for the new Superman Movie. The man who made a great reboot of Dawn of the Dead and got the Watchmen Made. Then it was released. The Public and Critics found the deconstruction of superheroes and especially Superman middling at best. MCU fans lobed grenades at the DC( not quite EU, yet)fans. They rode the DC fans about how emo the new Superman was. How the most Iconic superhero of all time couldn't break $700m. They teased about how MCU movies are making bank and getting good reviews. That's when you start to get a murmur of collusion, bribery, and deceit from those who opposed the MCU.
Something is Rotten in the state of Denmark:
After failing to see GotG fail like so many predicted, a bright spot was again on the horizon. BvS. The XMU fanatics are high off of their DoFP fix. Again I would get hate and praise every other post discussing XMU. With some coming from XMU and some from MCU. The DCEU fans were licking their wounds at Man of Steel destruction porn 3rd act, but that was Superman's first movie. He hadn't become the Superman we know and love. The DCEU will right the course and correct the mistakes of Man of Steel. And then opening weekend happened. $420m world wide in one opening weekend a record. Pride cometh before a fall. Toxic Word of Mouth, China not that impressed, and no more markets to expand into fed into the 2nd week collapse at the box office. Also add to the fact almost all the critics lambasted it. Batman v Superman made Rotten Tomatoes famous. Until this day people still don't know how to interpret the % and Rating of it, though. This was the final straw. Non MCU fans had had enough. There is no way that the MCU can get so many Fresh critic scores while DCEU, and XMU couldn't. There has to be a conspiracy dreamed up by Walt Disney's Frozen Head. How could BvS get bad reviews? It couldn't be the choppy editing, that was just it's style. It couldn't be the indifference of Cavil's acting when people blew up, that was him showing regret. It couldn't be that Superman killed a dude by pushing him throw a wall and super sonic speed, he turned his shoulder at the last second. It couldn't be the Director laughing at killing fan favorite Jimmy Olsen, that was funny. It couldn't be Riddler-esq Luthor, He was just a new jolly rancher loving take on Luthor. It couldn't be the cave troll Doomsday, Doomsday is Iconic. It couldn't be Batman murdering people, he did so in the past in like 1940, and in 1989. And MOST defiantly it couldn't be the Martha! scene. That was a layered brilliant scene that MCU kids couldn't understand. Oldmanmaclain and Joby Dimms said there was at least 5 layers to that scene. When asked to elaborate they said MCU fan's couldn't comprehend them if they explained it as if to a Kindergartner.
The Wars to End All Wars:
This was the battle cry of the MCU fanatics "THE AIRPORT SCENE!". Civil War will lay waste to all. Not only do we have most of the Avengers in the movie The Feige pulled off something no one thought possible. He brought Spiderman back home. The DCEU was still licking their wounds and massaging their bruised ego when Civil War opens. The comparisons were made and BvS was found wanting. Never fear the XMU offers a balm for DCEU wounds with the opening of Apocalypse. After the stunning success of DofP and Deadpool, surely Apocalypse would complete a trifecta and enough cover for people to stop bashing BvS. The warning signs were there. Ivan Ooze, Bryan Singer back after long hiatus, controversy of violence against women, and lack luster trailers. The soothing balm that Apocalypse was supposed to be turned out to be napalm burning the DCEU's wounds and XMU's hands.
Suicide Solutions for Strange Problems:
Now that the screams of Martha from the MCU fanatics had died down to a roar, DCEU fanatics could recoup. Suicide Squad will be there to right the ship, that BvS didn't correct, and was caused by the course Man of Steel put the DCEU on. Signs were there for it too. 5 weeks time to write the script. The first trailer not going over well, and reports of Leto giving out used condoms and other douche-baggery things. Then the second trailer came out. And the people rejoiced. So much so that DC had the trailer house that cut the trailer edit the movie from 2 different cuts of the movie. A monstrosity was born. It really showed in the final product that a trailer house edited the film. Just like BvS and MoS before it, it made enough money but couldn't get critical reviews. The second wave of bribery, collusion, and bias fills the boards. After DCEU fanatics embarrassed themselves with petitions to ban RT, the more moderate among the MCU haters eased Bias into their rants. Of course Disney didn't pay for reviews. It was pointed out to them of all the major bombs Disney has produced. Why not pay for those? So they took the tactic of bias. The critics gave more positive reviews to MCU because of the continuity and liking previous films by them. It was a unconscious bias the critics unfairly have.
No Old Mans Land:
Finally the partnership that started back before their was a DCEU has paid off. Logan a critical darling for XMU and was a great swan song for a well beloved character and actor. The DCEU held up their part they brought a beloved character who's time in the spotlight is way over due. Wonder Woman wasn't just a movie it was a social movement. A female director, with the biggest budget a Female Director has had, who is directing the biggest female comicbook icon, and she hit it out the park. American women, men, and children flocked to it. They fanatics on the MCU side could finally be shut up by the fanatics on the other side. Murmurs of a new weapon in the wars was discussed. The weapon's code name Artificial Boosters. Meanwhile Marvel was going to get it's first critical and financial bomb. Doctor Strange, defied the odds. Then MCU ripped off 4 more successes. They gave us a Spiderman we've never seen, an actual teenager with problems. A fresh take in the style of John Hughes teen movie. A GotG movie that built on the success of it's previous outing. cementing the Guardians in pop culture psyche. Thor Ragnarok who redefined Thor. It brought him out of lack luster solo movies into a bonafide hit both critically and financially. All through out this run Code Name: Artificial Boosters were launched at DCEU in full force. There was no murmurs or whispering now. And then a show down nobody asked for...
An Extraordinarily Shallow League or not with a bang:
After seeming years of lack luster movies, DC was finally going to pull out it's big swinging dick. The League. A movie fans have drooled over for years. A movie that should redefine comic book hit. The warning signs were there. Personal Tragedy, 2 directors, rumors of sky rocketing budget, and the mustache that ruined a character. This was pitted vs a sure fire mediocre movie both in style, grace and box office. Black Panther surprised everyone. It was a cultural event as strong as Wonder Woman. This kicked off a volley of Code Name: Artificial Boosters against the MCU. 2 can play at this game. Despite this new tactic Black Panther showed that a African American director, with mostly African American cast, with a large budget could thrive in this world. Not just Black Men and Women, but the effortlessness at showing any women in power and it not be a big deal. Of course women can have characters who are empowered. Of course African American men can be a hero and role model on screen. When I asked after 3 weeks in theater if Black Panther's domestic totals could beat Justice Leagues World Wide totals I was given a one word answer. No. No debate no nothing. It was impossible. Black Panther shocked the world and did the impossible.
(also around this time a comic book fan breaks his shoulder and wrecks his car. A few months apart from each other.)
Disarray, Delay, Fox is on the Way:
Some MCU fanatics still poke the half mutilated but still living carcass of the DCEU. They don't get the same reaction they are seeking. It's like their dance partner decided to lay down on the dance floor and take a nap. The DCEU still talks even in it's current situation. It lists out streams of ideas for movies seeing which one sticks. The call out the revolving door of directors they want to have, but few answer the call. The XMU hears them say this and does the same. Gambit is coming we just can't keep any directors on it. Maybe the 5th will be the charm. DCEU offers up 2 Jokers no one asked for. Then Rock Bottom. Disney buys Fox. It seems the often maligned Dark Phoenix and the 3 times delayed New Mutants will be XMU swansong. With a bitter regret the XMU says it should've been you Logan it should've been you. While this is the end of XMU's woahs we all look fondly back at their movies and the hours of wasted energy debating them. To some it's too bitter of a pill to swallow. They will stay in a time loop when it comes to X-men always reliving 2000-2019. Meanwhile the DCEU is brushing off itself. It has 3 new movies and it looks promising. Aquaman seems to be lighter, funny, and has spectacle and heart. A little like the MCU way of doing things. Shazaam feels light hearted and breezy. It looks like the DCEU finally has cast off their grimy, grity, dark shackles. And their Crowning Jewel is WW1984. While all this is happening the MCU quietly breaks off $2 billion at the box office and produces another sure fire fail turned into a hit with Antman and the Wasp. Through all of this the conspiracy theories were spouted and held on to, even though most people don't believe it. Then something know one saw coming... The MCU gets pulled into a twitter-verse tornado of shit.
The Final Count Down:
Gunn's final count down was to his firing, for his vile and disgusting "jokes." It's the final delayed countdown for XMU to it's last 2 movies. That's a final goodbye. It's the final countdown to see if a MCU female can even get close to the DCEU's Golden God-Killer. The response to the trailer says no. And It's the final countdown the the culmination of 20 movies in Avengers 4. I could leave it here, but it doesn't end on a happy note. Gunn who was maligned constantly (and some say appropriately) by DCEU, XMU, and even some MCU fans, now he has entered the arena this time representing DCEU. How will this effect the on going war? Will this cause fans to shy away? Can there ever be a lasting peace in any of this? None can say for sure. In this long war many battles have been fought and one thing is true, there is no way to tell where the twists and turns will take us.
