It never should've existed in the first place. Good riddance.

Sucks. It's one of my favorite logos, and Cleveland has almost an "anti-branding" approach aside from Chief Wahoo, the stylized "Indians" script they sometimes use, and the barely-stylized alternate "Indians" "print lettering." Their "C" logo is just a completely nondescript block-letter C, and they have some really boring/ugly uniform designs, including just gray road jerseys with an ugly block-letter "Cleveland" on the front.
If they're dropping Chief Wahoo, they need to come up with something with a bit more character/less ugly/less boring than their other logos.

Chief Wahoo has only been retired from the uniform the team wears on the field. It will still be available on team shop merchandise. The Indians aren’t about to lose the copyright they have on him due to all the “outrage”. Don’t be surprised if he is resurrected after the 2019 season. Dolan only made this move to appease the commissioner and get awarded the all star next season. It’s all political bullshit

Dissapointing. One of the best logo in MLB history.

I think this is a good step in the right direction and yet I also find it odd how in two major American sports there are outcries against some Indian themed things and not others. In baseball there are still the Braves. In football a bunch, myself included, are against the racist name of "Redskins." And yet there are still the KC Chiefs and both the fans of them and the Braves do the "Tomahawk Chop" to stereotypical Indian sounding music from an old Cowboys killing Indians western. Why doesn't anyone take that seriously and have an outcry against it? I just don't understand why some Indian types of things in sports are more offensive than others.

Fer chrissakes fuck off with all of that. You morons raise a fuss about Chief Wahoo and now we have to put up with this atrocity as the Cleveland "logo":

There is an outcry over the tomahawk chop. Also, (and this is just my personal view) Chiefs and Braves are both generic terms (like Warriors) as opposed to a slang term specifically pointing out the ethnicity of a people whose culture was destroyed. Honestly the term Indians isn't offensive in my opinion, it's the racist logo that I can't believe is still in use today. Then you have the Florida State Seminoles who have the expressed permission of the Seminole tribe to use their likeness so there's no issue there. I feel like this topic comes up about every six months on this board and the people who don't understand the problem never will. I'm surprised nobody has made the Vikings or Fighting Irish comparison yet. And as that Cleveland fan pointed out, the organization will continue to profit from their racism by selling Wahoo merchandise, they just won't feature it on their official uniforms. Baby steps, I guess.

Anyone remember "Chief Noc-a-Homa"? He had a teepee in the outfield of Fulton County Stadium and he would do a little war dance every time a Braves player hit a homer (Hank Aaron must have given him a workout). Later, they had an Indian princess called "Win-a-Lotta" (stinks). I think the Chief was a real native. Deaf-mute players William Hoy and Luther Taylor were universally called "Dummy". Native players Albert Bender and John Meyers were called "Chief". And dark complected players Jay Clarke and George Cuppy were called "Nig". I don't think those nicknames will ever come back.

What's next? A group of people named Bill try to get Buffalo to change the name of their football team because their first name has become synonymous with losing?

Pretty soon, no logos, no mascots, no anything.
Do liberals have to destroy everything?

I don't think the logo was racist per se. Maybe you could argue the name Wahoo was somehow disrespectful. However, I'm glad it's gone because it looked REALLY stupid, and an embarrassment.
The Indian logos in sports haven't been particularly great, but I think the Blackhawks one looks dignified.

The Redskins name and Chief Wahoo logo are overtly racist while the others aren't, or at least are not as obviously so to people. 'Braves' is a complimentary name while Redksins is a racial slur, and the chop at least comes off as an enjoyable and celebratory fight song while the chief is a patronizing caricature. I honestly don't really care what happens to these things, but they're obviously stupid and would not be tolerated by other races. And people pretending they can't see why anybody would be offended by them are completely full of shit. Also, I have to question the motives of anyone who says they love that logo. It's fucking stupid looking.
