I thought Diedrich Bader and Lily Tomlin were good.
Tough to replace Raymond Bailey as Mr. Drysdale

I liked it when I saw it in the theater as a kid.
The critics sure trashed it, heh.

It's a pretty funny spoof. I like Baywatch Ellie May.

Tough to replace Raymond Bailey as Mr. Drysdale Dabney Coleman was a good choice, but yeah, Bailey was irreplaceable in that role.

With a wacky title like THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, we should know what we're in for, right? The problem is that the makers don't seem to know the difference between hillbilly and amish. The Clampett family knows that a stranger looking through the window of their house could be a threat, but they don't understand when they themselves are being mistaken for trespassers? They know who Hank Williams and Dolly Parton are, which means they must have a radio and/or a record player, so why don't they recognize other forms of technology? I understand that things are exagerated for comedic effect, but you still have to keep things consistent. And no matter how cartoonish things get, you can't forget that you're making a live-action movie. This film contains goofy sound effects, fast motion sequences and even the JEOPARDY music that highlights cluelessness. The actors were trying to make the most out of the unfunny material, but producer/director Penelope Spheeris kept telling them to mug for the camera. Lily Tomlin and Kevin Connolly suffered the most, being told to make all kinds of weird head movements. The former does a few times what I think was the inspiration for the grimacing face emoji. One of the few times Rob Schneider has been truly funny was in HOME ALONE PART 2: LOST IN NEW YORK. Here, he basically plays the same character and even then he couldn't get a chuckle out of me. After playing Ernest P. Worrell in so many movies, Jim Varney now plays the most calmed and chill character in a cast full of caricatures. I'm glad that he wanted to show he had range (and he does have a very likable presence here), but did he have to go such extremes when picking projects? Jed Clampett is a total bore of a character! He rarely has a reaction! Even when he finds out that Laurette Voleur (his fiancée) is a gold digger named Laura Jackson, he comes off as a man who's channel surfing and realizes he doesn't have all the channels. Speaking of Laura, her plan was to have Woodrow Tyler (her secret boyfriend) wire money out of Jed's account at the wedding. He was even ready to press "enter" the moment the priest said "You may kiss the bride." Would the transaction have been approved? Wouldn't Laura have to sign something before being allowed to share an account with her new husband? And how stupid do you have to be to commit a crime like that in public?! Right after the truth about them comes out, Jethrine (Jed's niece) forcefully kisses Tyler. You know, because sexual assault is funny when a woman does it to a man. Especially if she's unattractive (this one is actually played by a male actor). It's so funny that the camera keeps cutting back to them and holds the shot for 2-3 seconds. I hope my sarcasm is readable. Even if this was funny, it wouldn't make sense in-universe. I mean, is Jethrine is too blind/deaf to notice what Tyler was about to do to her own family? 3/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog. It's a pretty funny spoof. Huh? Spoof?

It's certainly not the worst movie remake of a classic TV show. I have it on DVD.

Right up there with the Problem Child as a horrible early 90s movie.

Funny movie.
Diedrich Bader is hilarious in dual roles.
Varney gives a decent against type performance as Jed.

It's not bad, Diedrich Bader and Jim Varney were perfect casting choices. The guy that played Jethro is the only one that's still alive from the original series.
