I think Payton and Sanders are no-brainers. Most of the others you can make a case for. I went with Tomlinson. As deadly as he was in the backfield, he could kill you catching the ball as well.

I picked the same three. Whomever picked Bettis is obviously joking. He was not even top three of his era.

Number 4 for me is probably a toss-up between Emmitt Smith and Eric Dickerson.

Earl Campbell should definitely be on this list even though he doesn't have the numbers like some the other ones. However, I would say Earl is definitely top 3 of all time. Earl would just run people over. LOL!
Earl Barry Emmitt

I think Barry Sanders is far and away the best. He had plenty of runs for negative yardage but he would then follow those up with runs only he could do. He did not have blazing speed but I have never seen a back who could accelerate like him.
Backs like OJ and Payton and others in that era I simply haven't seen enough of beyond some highlights on Youtube so I can't include them.
I also went Eric Dickerson, who was a magnificent runner. He seemed to glide across the field with long strides and he was fast.
My third choice is Adrian Peterson, whose stock has fallen but I think was the best back of his era.
I was tempted to go with Marshall Faulk, one of the great all purpose backs.

Btw, Jim Brown should be on this list too. Not Super Bowl era. Hence no Gale Sayers, either. Barry Sanders Bo Jackson O.J. Simpson

For that one year or so Hillis was a great one to watch. Not sure what happened.

Barry, HERSCHEL WALKER and Walter Payton.
As others have noted, Jim Brown would be in there if not for the SB era rule. He would probably bump Emmitt on my list. If we include USFL stats then Herschel is there too.

In all honesty though my three would be
Barry Sanders Walter Payton LT
LT was legitimately an unholy terror in his prime. His 2006 season may have been the best season a running back has ever had.
