I'm not surprised by this at all. I hope Black Panther is a leading contender for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup & Hairstyling. The people who did that really did their jobs.

The character development of Thanos and Thor were some of the best written in years for a summer blockbuster film, and I liked the theme of sacrifice. But let's get real, it never pretends to be high art. It's a movie primarily for us fanboys and I'm fully content with that.

Infinity War was more or less another set-up film; the real film Marvel is making lies in Avengers 4.

I'm not surprised I figured they'd give Black Panther the push out of the two, it's probably got the better chance at winning anything though I preferred Infinity War.

You've got to laugh.
If it wasn't for WW, this would probably be the worst movie any studio has got behind in a big way to push for major awards.
Keep using that race and gender card while it's hot, guys!

that is not new. They previously stated that they would push BP for Best Film and other categories and Infinity War for popular Oscar which disintegrated.
BP may have some chances with music, makeup and costumes.
And don't forget there is huge pressure on the Academy because of (low) ratings as well as from the Mouse industry and certain demographics (fanboys and AA). "Get Out" was nominated Best Film last year, a great satirical horror comedy but best film worthy? Laughable.

This is further proof that I was right about Disney pushing for the Most Popular Movie category earlier because of MCU. Despite his denials, it's obvious that MCU Dictator Kevin Feige is desperate to get a non-technical Oscar for MCU. That's why he's putting all his chips on Black Panther and campaigning shamelessly for Black Panther.

Yeah, everybody knows this, I mean, it's not like Black Panther is considered one the best movies of this year by critics and people in the industry, and Disney thinks it has a shot of getting a Best Picture nomination. Btw, this was Bob Iger's decision, not Kevin Feige. What about DCEU dictator Walter Hamada? Isn't he desperate to get a non technical Oscar for the DCEU?

gosh, the race baiting is going to overflow for this one. disney will play the race card to the point of embarrassing, since it is the only reason they are pushing it. but Oscars are judged by film art not by film race

Because MCU wants to use the race card to pressure the Academy into giving Black Panther an Oscar nomination or the Academy will be labeled as racist.

I swear DC Fan sounds like some crazy conservative talk show host who HAS to put his own crazy spin on people's names because he's got nothing else. It's like when Obama haters did the whole "Today KING Obama (or Barack HUSSEIN Obama)..." A lot of his points have been pointed to Perlmutter the REAL dictator at Marvel, but DC Fan just blissfully ignores it because it doesn't fit his sealioning narrative. Much like he was all about bashing Gunn for the sake of virtue but has now gone deafeningly quiet because he can't ever admit he's wrong. He just has to keep fighting the fanboy war. I feel like the whole Oscar thing is a lose lose anyway. If an MCU film doesn't win, people like DC Fan well just spew his rhetoric that DC films are still better and the Academy did good on not bowing to Feige, and if they did win an Oscar, it would just be "The Academy finally buckled under pressure to give the MCU a pity award." That's what I hate about this whole thing (first the Popular category, and now the big BP push), it just gives people like DC Fan more reason to handwave any merits a Marvel film might actually deserve.

bizarre as it seems, most mcu fans I know thought IW was the better film so why is disney not pushing that. Black Panther had the better reviews from critics and that's what these Oscars lean more towards. They don't care what's popular with the public which is why these artsy indie movies usually win.
