Really?
for me he's only been in two movies I score a 6-6.5/10 or higher which are...
1)Nocturnal Animals (2016) - 6.5-7/10 2)Man of Steel (2013) - 6-6.5/10
so while one could be worse, it's not that impressive as I would imagine one would need at least 4 movies I score in the 7+ range (or at least a 6-6.5/10) to start to stand out from the pack.
p.s. for measure... Tom Cruise is my #1 in that regard as he's been in 15 movies I score a 7 or higher as damn near everyone else would be lucky to get about half of that figure. also, for the record... only 188 movies managed to score a 7 or higher from me. counting my 6-6.5/10 range movies that total increases to 234 movies. I have seen over 2,200+ total movies.

I always liked Carrie Snodgrass and she never got a whole lot of attention.
Marilyn Monroe was actually a very talented comedienne. She was so funny in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and "The Seven Year Itch".
And Karen Black was always very under-rated. Also, Susan Tyrell, who I think they just didn't know what to do with. But she was always worth a look. And, then, I'll have to say Sylvia Miles.

Most people rate more than 4 Michael Shannon movies 7/10 or higher. Many people probably rate at least 4 of his movies 8/10 or higher.

moviemouth but many, if not most(?), people tend to rate too many movies too high in general as, at least in my mind, the vast majority of known or semi-known movies ain't that great and I rate accordingly with 5/10 being average and then goes up and down fairly evenly from there in score. basically you need some sort of standard so you can separate the gems from pretty much everything else and my rating scale does this. so even those who hand out plenty of 7's and 8's etc, they still should have a way to separate what truly stands out for them vs what does not and that's basically the point of my post is that not many actors (or actresses) have been in many movies that stand out from the pack. Cruise is the king in terms of volume of movies that stand out in my mind as not many others would have maybe half or so of the volume of movies that Cruise does as when I look at plenty of the bigger names, off the top of my head, I would not expect to see many exceed four movies I score a 7 or higher.
so in short... whatever rating system someone uses, they need a system that separates the gems from everything else and my rating system does this well.
with that said... the OP may feel Michael Shannon has been in a fair amount of stand out level movies and that's fine but one needs a way to measure things fairly accurately to see who stands out from the pack be it Michael Shannon or whoever even based on their own judgement like I am doing and I realize things will vary some but in general it seems the bigger movie stars tend to land in better movies than the ones a bit short of that in general etc.
p.s. come to think of it... I might go through some bigger name actors in the future just to see how many movies they have been in that I score a 7 or higher as I would be curious just to see how things play out as I know Tom Cruise is my #1 in terms of volume of movies I score a 7 or higher but I am not sure who would be my #2 and so on in this regard.

But she was always worth a look. And, then, I'll have to say Sylvia Miles. I have always liked Snodgress. I have recently ordered a Bronson dvd with her in it called Murphy's Law - 86'. She is a psycho who is released from prison and goes after all those responsible for putting her away, murdering anyone who gets in her way. She is very believable and ruthless. She works out and goes after Murphy, a cop on the run with a foul mouthed teen, after murdering his wife and then setting him up. It is a real b grader, but a lot of fun. I bet Snodgress had fun making it.
Monroe was always a treat to watch, but I am not so sure if she is considered under-rated.
Black, Tyrrell—a one of a kind and asset to any film she graced—and Miles were all terrific.
I always liked Lois Smith, who was also in Five Easy Pieces and such a warm and giving character actress—she is still alive—and of course Tuesday Weld, who just didn't seem to want to fit into the Hollywood niche and turned down roles that she would have been absolutely terrific for. She was also a very attractive woman. She apparently wanted to play Frances Farmer but lost out to Lange. Now that would have been a very interesting turn, since I kowtow and grovel at the feet of Lange's no holds barred and raw fully exposed performance.
Oh Yeah, She was Great in " MURPHY's LAW".

The only one who I thought did a decent job in those Scooby Doo movies. Or anything else starring Freddie Prinze Jr. He's really great in SLC Punk.

Great answer. She is excellent in Factory Girl and The Lost City of Z (her final scene in this movie is perfection imo).
