It made some sense, but was also hilarious at the same time.
As for Duvall, she was so controlled in this film, that there was no real instance when we could laugh at her, like in 3 Women, but she was still mighty fine.
But that look on her face just seemed like it was Duvall herself who was terrified. She would have been forced into that look due to the control and psychotic manipulation of Kubrick. She would have likely given the same terrified look in all the takes I would say. It is a difficult one, because Duvall, being such the spontaneous natural actress that she was, was controlled to give a controlled performance, but it still comes across as a raw performance at the same time.
