Anthony Hopkins or Brian Cox? I guess I should assume AH, but I very much preferred BC in the 1986 "Manhunter".

There names are spelled different btw. I'm just the opposite. Anthony Hopkins was too over the top for me. The Brian Cox character actually seemed very intelligent, and the AH character just acted like he was very intelligent.

Brian Cox's version is so subtle that I forgot about his character immediately after his scenes ended.

I'm going with Bruce from "Jaws."
Slightly biased as I grew up surfing in Cocoa Beach (no great whites there), but I was 'buzzed' (got burned by its sandpaper-like skin) by a small nurse shark once. They aren't built like the scary sharks, but to see and feel their weight so close to you...and to realize they have no morals or 'human stuff.' It could have killed me if it wanted to, and it wouldn't have skipped a beat. Paddled hard to the shore, like the granny who lifted a car to save the child. It made me feel like an actual "animal" which was way more horrifying than any human experience I can recall.
That was the most terrifying and unexpected thing I've ever experienced.

How utterly frightening. Back before webcams, us 'inlanders' would plan our hookie days around when a rocket would go off. You can see them great at "2nd Light" off of Patrick's Air Force Base. The waves are pretty tame, so it was a gamble to make the drive. I saw a lot of launches, but if they were scrubbed...and the waves sucked...we'd just blast a joint out in the water. The whole time you're thinking you're the superior species. Then something swims by...something at least your size and weight. Nurse sharks are bottom feeders and are mostly harmless, but it was like a submarine going by at the time. Best adrenaline shot ever!

Joe Pesci in Goodfellas and Casino. They're pretty much the same character. Jimmy (De Niro) from Goodfellas is equally scary even though he isn't as openly psychotic as Pesci.

The score and cinematography get me good.

Leatherface is the most realistic, so it makes him all the more creepy and unsettling to the point where the acts he (and his family) does could in fact occur in reality.

Sadako in the original Ring (1998) I have to admit, that scene emerging from the tv literally had me squirming in my chair.
Tempted to say Nosferatu (and his alien cousin the Vorvon from a Buck Rogers tv show)
but I'll go with the Wicked Witch of the West.
"I'll get you my pretty, and your little dog too!"
