Or I mean, how it was made. As far as I understand it it depicts joan Crawford as being a bad mother in real life. However how is it that they could make this movie without being sued for slander?
Because I know that raging bull is a similar movie, and the real life boxer threatened to sue the people that made the movie, but as far as I know, mommie dearest probably was even more insulting than raging bull, to the real life person that the movie was about.
Even if joan Crawford was dead by then, wouldn't somebody in her family sue the makers of the movie? I don't know if she was dead by then or not.

@joetorrence You might want to take a look at this link MOMMIE DEAREST wouldn't somebody in her family sue the makers of the movie?
The movie was based on a book By Christina Crawford, Joan's adopted daughter.
Christina Crawford's book, on which this film was based, was one of the biggest-selling memoirs in the history of American publishing, with more than 700,000 copies sold in hardback and more 3,000,000 in paperback..
I don't know if she was dead by then or not. The film was released three years after the source novel was published, and four years after Joan Crawford's passing in 1977.
imo, it was made because gossip and dissing celebrities, sell !

In Bette Davis' own words, I think they had their butts covered like this:
"You should never say bad things about the dead, only good… Joan Crawford is dead. Good.”

It was a best-seller! Crawford was a manupulitive bitch. With that said I still like her movies, and her status as a movie legend!

The producers, having purchased the rights to a best selling book, hoped that lightning would strike twice and that the film would attract large audiences, and therefore that they would make money. It didn't (at the time anyway) and they didn't.
Joan wasn't around to sue anyone and the nearest relative was the one that wrote the book....
Whatever one thinks of the film Dunaway is aces as Joanie. An imitation silk purse from a sow's ear.
