Which performance would you recommend to someone from each of these actors who performed in crime dramas and film noir in the 1940s & 1950s? If you could pick just one performance for each of them you feel encapsulates what made them successful in the genre?
Actors
Dan Duryea (born January 23, 1907, White Plains, New York, U.S)
Van Heflin (born December 13, 1908, Walters, Oklahoma, U.S.)
Dana Andrews (born January 1, 1909, Near Collins, Mississippi, U.S.)
Robert Ryan (born November 11, 1909, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.)

Robert Mitchum - Thunder Road / Arthur Ripley (1958) I've not heard of 'Thunder Road' or director Arthur Ripley before, I'm gonna look into it, thanks. This last summer I reviewed it on the weekly thread and also posted the review to the Action and Adventure board where I got an insightful comment from telegonus. Maybe that's a place to start. Thanks for your reply.

"Good movie, Mike. It always holds my interest and sympathy for the main character. It's was Mitchum's "baby", and it shows. Yet this works in the movie's favor. He seldom played unambiguous (morally, I mean) good guys, so his morally ambiguous not so bad guy was a good role for him. He's so typically Mitchum: somewhat of an outsider even in his home town, his own turf. He bonds casually with others, loves his family and girl. but nobody owns this guy or can control him."
