I say this not having seen a lot of his recent movies, which to me all have at least the same tone if not the same plot, but I have to go with “usually nothing special”. Of his movies I’ve seen, he was great in The Departed, pretty good in in Boogie Nights, and ok in Date Night, in which he essentially played himself. He was truly truly awful in The Happening and average to mediocre in everything else I’ve seen. He seems to fill a niche though, in movies enjoyed by middle America that have great opening weekends and then end up in the $5 blu ray bin at Best Buy a few months later. If Mark Wahlberg was a restaurant he’d be Applebee’s.

No. He's generally the worst part of pretty good movies. He used to pick good projects regularly, but now his mediocre performances are in piece of shit Michael Bay movies and run of the mill action movies so it becomes more obvious that he does nothing other than his typical, bland bullshit.
How he was Oscar nominated for The Departed still makes absolutely no sense to me.

He's a better actor than he was a singer.

In general, no. But every once in a while he surprises you. I thought his performance in Patriots Day was spectacular. Dude starts crying at one point and it feels genuine. He was oddly fascinating in the terrible Mile 22, where he played a quirky asshole. He was miscast in All The Money In The World, but he was decent all the same. He's at his best in films like Lone Survivor and Shooter. He seems to have a good feel for his (limited) range, I'll say that. He doesn't take a ton of risks, which doesn't lead to the endless unwatchable filmography of Nic Cage for example, who has all the talent in the world.
Overall I'd say he's a capable actor, if not a great one. He's improved considerably over the years, but a lot of negativity regarding his talent stems from his performance in The Happening, which I refuse to blame him for. It was a shit script and he clearly had no direction whatsoever.

Terrific soundtrack and the movie had great atmosphere - kind of like how King's movies are set in New England - or movies shot in the Pacific Northwest - or Insomnia for that matter - i.e. Alaska 7/10 beers for this guy - fun ride - own it - love it

He is like John Wayne or Clint Eastwood, played the same guy in every movie. The Departed and Boogie night happened to fit right into that character.

We all know that you have terrible taste in movies, but even you should admit that he has more clunkers than good ones. But the real question is a chicken or egg kind of thing - are the movie bad because he is in them? Or is he in bad movies?

But lets call a spade a spade here - the same argument can be said about Robert DeNiro now - i.e. more clunkers than gems. Does that make Bobby D a subpar actor? Movies I enjoyed with Marky Mark: Daddy's Home Ted The Fighter The Other Guys The Happening The Departed Invincible Planet of the Apes The Perfect Storm Boogie Nights Fear The Basketball Diaries Are we getting 'It's a Wonderful Life' here - i.e. the greatest movie of All-Time? No - but they're movies that show his acting range, talent that are well worth a view or two (or twenty)

At times good enough not to hurt the movie that badly.

Wahlberg has been great in exactly one film, The Departed. Other than Boogie Nights, he’s been completely average at best in everything else, and honestly bad in some of them. Now I realize that Ted 2 isn’t supposed to be Godfather II, but he still doesn’t bring anything to the table. He’s essentially a less muscled The Rock.
