Technically any big budget extravaganza that’s been nominated since 2009 is invalid. Because they expanded the field to 10 due to the backlash from TDK not getting nominated. Those extra 5 spots were basically supposed to be the “Popular Film” category. Good point. But I would argue BP goes beyond that after Disney attempted to openly rig the awards for it this year. I feel like any summer blockbuster that’s third act is basically a big fan service jerk off session doesn’t really belong at the Oscars. Even WW devolved from a badass war film to a God on God fight fest. If you have to force your story to appeal to the masses then it’s probably not made for the Academy.

Chicago is one big jerkoff session for musical fans. Is there even a story to that film? It won Best Picture. I don't always agree with the Academy, but one thing that's become clear to me over the years is that there's no set criteria as to what makes an 'Oscar film.' They had to acknowledge the CBM genre sooner or later, Black Panther finally made it happen.

Yeah I don’t really put much stock in the Oscars. I love all kinds of films, but if stuff like Black Panther is going to get nominated and everyone is going to say it doesn’t deserve it then what’s even the point? Either they matter or they don’t. We can’t really have it both ways.

Best Oscar nomination since Avatar.
This is why we should always base movies on animated films.
Avatar and Pocahontas. Black Panther and Lion King.
We out here in deez STREETS!!! Black Panther AF!!!

It's not going to win anyway. I was going to say that too, but then I looked at the other nominations. The Favourite was pretty good, but it feels like it's only up there so they wouldn't have a record few amount of movies. I don't see Roma winning either, when the Artist won as a foreign language film, it was genuinely groundbreaking. You have to go an extra mile to win over English speakers with a non-English movie. And Vice actually wasn't that good... Bale's performance itself was mesmerizing but everything else was just 'there'. If you were to say Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody don't win, then among the rest BP has a legit shot. Otherwise, yeah, I see it going to Green Book. But it's not as if T'Challa has no shot in hell, seems to be a weaker year at the top.

If Black Panther doesn’t win any Oscars, it will still be the greatest movie ever made.

Innit? We already know Disney openly tried to rig the Oscars for BP. So it invalidates the flick from serious consideration, and nobody here should be allowed to cite it as an achievement for the MCU even if it wins something. This isn't the position to take. One day another CBM will win, a non MCU movie, maybe even a DC movie. And on that day I want everyone to be happy about it without resorting to rationalizations as to why it was nominated even though it wasn't a good movie.
This is a good day for ALL of us, because it shows that the Academy is finally willing to include the big pop culture type movies we love. After all who can argue that Superman the Movie, The Dark Knight, and maybe even The Avengers could have also been nominated in their respective years?
Did Disney buy this nomination? There's some hints that might have been the case. But even if that were the case that doesn't change the fact that it turns into a good thing for those us who want to see this type of movie represented in the Oscars. Its an inroad.

Oh they count alright. You don't get to decide, The Academy does.
Why does this bother you anyway? The Academy voters are just a bunch of schmucks that work in film, mostly pretentious old white guys, it's not like they're special.

It's a tually a bad day. Becuse the Academy sent a message to all CBM studios that the only way you can get noninated for Best Picture is if you shamelessly and execusively use the race card throughout the movie.
