FAIL SAFE (1964) 5/5.
An absolutely brilliant Cold War thriller directed by Sidney Lumet. It’s based on the 1962 novel of the same name by Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler.
It stars Henry Fonda, Dan O'Herlihy, Walter Matthau, Larry Hagman, Fritz Weaver and Dom DeLuise. Henry Fonda, Walter Matthau and Larry Hagman in particular shine in this tense, international drama.
It’s the gritty and realistic portrayal of a fictional nuclear crisis. The fact that it was filmed in black and white, has no musical underscoring and contains many claustrophobic close-ups, sharp shadows and ponderous silences between several characters, gives it a very dramatic style.

Love this film. I actually think it's a better take on the prospect of WWIII than Dr. Strangelove, largely because Kubric went down the comedy route whilst Fail Safe is deadly serious.

I do enjoy Stanley Kubrick's work, but I agree that for such a subject, I personally find a more serious approach is generally more effective and rewarding.
