SHE (1935) 4/5.
A very enjoyable black and white American fantasy film that deals with a hidden civilization ruled by an all-powerful queen who has discovered the secret to immortality. It was written by Dudley Nichols and Ruth Rose, produced by Merian C Cooper and directed by Lansing C Holden and Irving Pichel.
The film is based on H Rider Haggard's novel of the same name, but the screenplay combines elements from all four books in the series - SHE, SHE AND ALLAN, AYESHA: THE RETURN OF SHE and WISDOM'S DAUGHTER. With music by Max Steiner, it stars Helen Gahagan, Randolph Scott, Helen Mack, Nigel Bruce and Gustav von Seyffertitz.
In 2006, Ray Harryhausen and Legend Films colourized the film, but it is best seen in its original black and white format.

"Who Must Be Obeyed". Saw it on a double bill with 'The Old Dark House'. What a Combo! Helen Gahagen was married to Melvin Douglas, Illeana Douglas' grandfather. 'She' was her only film appearance, although the wicked witch in 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' was inspired by her performance in 'She'. She lost a Senate race in 1950 to Richard Nixon. The woman who gave Nixon the nickname 'Tricky Dick'. Nixon had the movie 'She' re-released during the 1950 Senate campaign.

2. I know who Melvin Douglas is. I first came across him in BEING THERE, followed shortly afterwards by I NEVER SANG FOR MY FATHER.
3. Yes, I read about her inspiration on the Disney character. Such a shame she didn't continue to pursue her film career.
4. Yes, I read something about that at the same time I learned of her influence on SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS.
5. Smart lady.
6. Well, I guess that's why he earned the nickname, "Tricky Dick".
