THE UGLY AMERICAN (1963) 4/5.
An interesting and sometimes engrossing American adventure film, that was written by Stewart Stern and produced and directed by George Englund. It was based on the novel by the same name, by Eugene Burdick and William Lederer.
It stars Marlon Brando, Sandra Church, Eiji Okada, Pat Hingle, Arthur Hill and Judson Pratt. Portions of the film were made in Thailand, which stood in for the fictional nation of Sarkhan. Kukrit Pramoj, a Thai politician and scholar, was hired as a cultural advisor and expert to the filmmakers. He even played the role of Sarkhan's Prime Minister, Kwen Sai, in the film. Later, in 1975, he actually became the thirteenth Prime Minister of Thailand in real life. Since then, the word "Sarkhan" has entered the Thai language as a nickname for Thailand itself.
It’s a reasonable political thriller, with several action sequences spread out along its lengthy running time.
