That thread about Sinead O'Connor make me wonder about other celebrity conversions. Some noteable ones:
Cat Stevens (converted to Islam, became Yusaf Islam) Tom Cruise, John Travolta (Scientology) Sammy Davis jr (Judaism) Prince and Eddie Murphy (Jehovan's Witness)
Any others?

Muhammad Ali converted to Islam. I guess quite a lot black Americans have converted to Islam.
Julia Roberts I believe is a practicing Hindu. I believe her conversion was driven by need for spirituality.
I guess many if not all converts have some sort of motive. For example, Will Smith was in India a few days back and doing some Hindu ritual (even if he is not a Hindu). Do believe the real motive of it was some sort of publicity or marketing. Though I do believe Julia's conversion is more honest.

My only comment on this topic is that it is understandable that the people who are known as celebrities, should want to find some other meaning in their lives than the shallow pressure put on them by other people's expectations which are usually based on some false perception of worth as a person.
As I find all religions ridiculous, to me it doesn't matter which one, butt if it helps them deal with this ridiculous pressure, then it is understandable.

It strikes me more as a political/racial movement than a religious one. I know the members identify as Muslim but that strikes me mostly as a symbolic rejection against the "white mans's religion" (Christianity) for a more Native African one (Islam)

While all religions are flawed, I believe Hinduism is more about a way of life, rather than about God fearing followers, blindly believing in one separate divine entity that rules over all and everything. Hinduism which is so very ancient, is about inter-connectedness with all and everything. You would probably understand more Aj, are you not of Indian descent?

Yes, but there are as many wacko Hindus as wacko Muslims or Christians in the real world. Yes, on paper Hinduism does seem more like a way of life and there are quite a a few who do live to that spirit.

That's Alessandro Del Piero, a former Italian football player. Very good back in the days.

I don't believe religion is what makes people crazy or extreme. I think they would be, and are, crazy anyway. If your point is that religion does not magically remove every bit of craziness immediately, then sure it doesn't. I still believe that faith is not a disease. Faith saves the time, resources and heartache of trying bad ideas over and over. That of course does require that good leaders are available and followed, so it might go way off track. Nevertheless religion is a very good thing when good leaders are available and followed. No, science does not have sufficient answers to replace religion.

That dude liked white women to much.

Prince became one of Jehovah's Witnesses.
He studied with Larry Graham, another singer who also became one.

Any others? Just thought of another: George Harrison (Hare Krishnas).
