It is about the messages\themes and that relates to our everyday lives as well. According to the people that make the movie. I have seen that revenge theme in real life many times, and it does not make the woman as bad as the man. It is fucking human nature.

Revenge is a dish best served cold.
It doesn't make Emma any better than Flap if she was getting even.
I think there is a line where Emma says she'd hate to think she was choosing to be with the Lithgow character only as a way to get back at Flap. I like Jeff Daniels here, and I liked him even more in "Something Wild", where he was perfectly cast.

Why is it whenever a man does something, it is worse than when a woman does the same or similar? It is f<>king hypocritical and a double standard, especially in today's climate with all the equality calls. Women are going to find themselves losing some of their societal privileges and compensations.

Whatever it was she was choosing, she did exactly the same thing and if I recall the film, she got with Lithgow even before she caught Flap up to something with that female student at the college where he worked. Flap even said you don't know what we did Emma, or something of that sort. It was never totally clear, only that he was chasing other women.

Yes, Flap did say that. I'm no great example of sound judgment, Mr. Toasty Cheesy, but I always kind of saw Emma as this free-spirited person, and I usually find those type characters very endearing. I don't ever hear this get said, but Emma and Aurora were just about as opposite in temperament and outlook as a mother and daughter could be. Still, I always enjoyed their relationship very much.

I don't ever hear this get said, but Emma and Aurora were just about as opposite in temperament and outlook as a mother and daughter could be. Still, I always enjoyed their relationship very much. Yes, Emma was very free-spirited and strong willed and feisty and didn't let much get to her, or if she did, she dealt with it in her own special Emma way.... "Get into the car honey"... "Get into the car honey".... "Get into the car honey".
She is a great character and a real human character and so is Flap. That is why her death is so incredibly moving.
Aurora was so frickin' rigid within herself, that I can't help crack up big time, when Garrett tells her she needs a lot of drinks to get rid of the bug stuck up her ass. In spite of any flaws or foibles Aurora had, she loved Emma deeply and I didn't see her as a controlling mother, just very steadfast regarding her own principles and personal integrity.
Mr. Dirty, did you know that MacLaine's real life daughter wrote a tell all book about her life with Shirl about 8yrs ago? I don't know if you have read it, but apparently she was just another self-absorbed narcissist, but not by any means in the league of the one and only indomitable Mommie Dearest.

Agree with you on Jeff Daniels. I've talked about his performance since the movie was released, as is generally considererd a dick in the movie. And regardless of what his character is considered, it still shouldn't take away from his performance, contribution and impact within the film. Daniels was underscored by Nicholson who didn't posses any of the layer or depth that Daniels did and neither did Lithgow who got a throwaway nomination.
All considering too, Emma had an affair as well, yet she gets a free pass because she was supposedly doing something altruistic towards Lithgow because his wife had a bad back and he couldn't have sex with her.
Daniels'performance was terrific. He and Winger both did a great job of portraying the nuance and minutea of what makes people stay in and engage in bad relationships. "Who am if I'm not the man who is failing Emma?" ( paraphrase, can't remember the direct quote). That line summed up their whole relationship.
