I drank socially for a few years starting at about age 17 mostly because my friends were doing it. I've only been really drunk a couple of times. I'm a quiet drunk and sloppy. I remember walking home from my first keg party. One minute I was walking along and the next minute I realized I was lying in cold water. Turns out I had fallen into a drainage ditch. I wasn't seriously hurt but I broke the Hofbrauhaus mug I had bought in Germany. I eventually quit drinking because I really didn't like it much anyway.

I joke a lot about drinking, like as an excuse for doing something dumb. Example: "Wow, I screwed that up? It must have been the day I was drinking..."
But I've rarely been drunk. Buzzed, yes, and relaxed, yes, but drunk did not seem like a good thing to be. I was raised in a strict religious family, and drinking didn't happen, nor did dancing.
Then, when I went to college, my boyfriend and his buddies drank like fish. They would chug pitchers, while I sat at the bar with a Coke and my English Lit book, waiting to drive them back to their dorm. I saw the unfortunate after effects of their drinking and thought, what a waste.
Years later, I drank in moderation with meals, Margaritas with Mexican food and wine with Italian food, and I do like a gin & tonic on a hot day, but nothing to excess. Except after I lost my husband; for a year or so I stayed in an altered state. I couldn't deal with the loss otherwise.
But now I'm back to moderation, just enough to take any edge off an uncomfortable social situation. Or when cooking, it is pleasant to sip and taste and relax.
So I would say I'm a happy drinker, but I'll fall asleep long before I'm even close to drunk.

My point though was that people should at least experience some inebriation or even complete drunkenness at least once. I've quit too. But I don't regret the times, both good and bad, I had when I was using drugs and drinking. I have been stoned many times too, which I enjoyed more than drinking booze, but the last time was about 23yrs ago. It is all experience, but it is not necessary to have the experience, if one is wise to the detrimental affects due to someone else's experience. kls was taking a sensible approach and while it may be judged by others, I don't really see any reason to ridicule her for it. I'm not ridiculing kls. I as trying to have a meaningful discussion with her. And it worked, because she told me her true aversion to alcohol.
And sorry, I must disagree as a recovered alcoholic and drug addict. The journey is important. I learned much from my years of addiction and it gives a depth which lifelong teetotalers don't have. There is a time and a place for alcohol and drugs.

I am not judging your experiences gamey, but to say that there is a time and place, and because of this others need experience it to give them depth, is absurd and even self-absorbed. Perhaps kls doesn't have the same addictive personality as others. I am not saying that is a good or bad thing either, it is just what it is, but alcohol and drug intake can also lead to foolhardiness, regardless of the degree.

I'm an obnoxious party animal when drunk, but in a fun way. Think Jim Carrey from The Mask times 2000.

I met a dude last spring that had never had a single drink of alcohol or coffee in his entire life. (Not sure his age, but he was probably about 40-50)
He had also never seen Jurassic Park.
Last time I saw him I told him to pour some whiskey into a big mug of dark roast coffee and put on Jurassic Park!!!!!&!!

None. I quit drinking alcohol over 15 years ago and I don't miss it. I was never a fan of wine, beer or whiskey anyway and the only alcohol I liked was Vodka. Beer tastes horrible and I have no idea why so many people like it.
