The Casting Department did a great job here. All eight supposed members of the family do indeed bear a strong family resemblance: ![](http://cdn-static.denofgeek.com/sites/denofgeek/files/2015/11/guinness.jpg)

I watched this last night: 8 Women (2002) written and directed by François Ozon. Firmine Richard plays the black housekeeper but the rest of the ladies are members of one seriously dysfunctional family. Not my usual fare but I enjoyed it. I am sure it is much better if you speak French. Ozon's original concept was a remake of George Cukor's "The Women" (1939) but it ended as something completely different. Incidentally, my (official) DVD had the English subtitles hard-wired, so even if you watch it in the original French you cannot dispense with them. This seems very odd?: ![](http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XuBa-z94hTw/TZLNZ2jYIwI/AAAAAAAAA3c/4Vtxi1lIyu4/s1600/8+Women1+%25282%2529.JPG)

Oscar and Golden Globes Winner A Separation (2011) dir: Asghar Farhadi is all about family problems. I do not have a lot of respect for the Oscars but if they help to bring great films like this to a wider audience they cannot be all bad: ![http://markgowing.com/images/work/197/markgowing_asepararation_4.jpg](http://markgowing.com/images/work/197/markgowing_asepararation_4.jpg)

Czechoslovakian family themed comedies are wonderful, I find them highly entertaining... Ecce homo Homolka, Behold Homolka (1970) Jaroslav Papousek The extended Homolka family are preparing for a Sunday outing, looking forward to a break from the city, for a relaxing picnic lunch in a natural forest environment not far from their home in Prague. It is an exuberant film a universal comedy, subtle, highly visual, deeply perceptive and a hilarious depiction of family matters... The twin boys are Petr and Matej Forman the sons of the late director Milos Forman Pelísky , Cosy Dens (1999) Jan Hrebejk Is a brilliant comedy/drama I laughed so much, I also shed a tear , a beautifully crafted bittersweet tale set in the months from Christmas 1967, leading up to the ill-fated 1968 Prague Spring. Two families made up of three generations are close neighbours within a Prague apartment housing block. One family is headed by a stubborn army officer who is a staunch supporter of the communist system, a non believer in xmas, the other families father is an ardent foe of the Communists a war hero, who has been imprisoned several times because of his outspoken opposition to the regime, they have a xmas tree... Highly Recommended !! especially for Christmas theme viewing...

There are some pretty wacky families already cited, but surely none so weird as the one in The Saddest Music in the World (2003) dir: Guy Maddin. Members comprise the father (David Fox) who was (and still is) in love with beer baroness Lady Helen Port-Huntley (Isabella Rossellini). She however was in love with his son (Mark McKinney). She should have lost one leg in a car smash but, because the father, while drunk, accidentally amputates her undamaged leg to free her from the wreck, she has lost both. Late in the movie the father presents her with glass, beer-filled, prosthetic legs. McKinney's estranged brother (Ross McMillan) separated from his wife (Maria de Medeiros) after the death of their son, whose heart he carries with him in a wooden box. He has assumed Serbian nationality because, in his grief, he identifies with Serbia's grief at having caused World War I. She becomes McKinney's mistress resulting in sibling enmity when the connection is revealed. It is all very sad ... and funny ... but mainly weird. ![](https://gfx.videobuster.de/archive/v/cKwUszWccsIaO-swXibsczgcz0lMkawqiUyRjAxJTJGaW1hmSUyRmpwZWclMkbUZMVl-bFiYmMwMmYyZTliMGMxYtn2YmHcLmpwZyZyPXfvOA/the-saddest-music-in-the-world.jpg) ![](https://pxhst.co/avaxhome/ec/4d/00264dec_medium.jpeg)
