I didn't think you were, Melvin. but in any event, every professional has the obligation to keep their cool, no matter what is happening. He said it was anger, not racism that sparked his 'he's a n--er!' shouting. I get angry often with teaching and the crap that I have to put up with. I can't call a kid -- anything, not even lazy anymore. [ was called that many times growing up] He is lucky. he doesn't have a license to lose if anyone gets upset. I do. I agree. My only point was that he wasn't telling jokes. Those were deliberate insults during a heated argument. Fact is tho, if he wouldn't have used the N-word nobody would have cared. Comedians deal with hecklers all the time. Its just that this time they recorded someone using the n-word and everyone got all high and mighty.

Absolutely not! Sick of whiney Politically Correct complaining about this or that and expecting an apology for something. To some a joke is funny to others it's not. You can't please everyone. If a person doesn't like the joke told then simply ignore it and move to the next. If you don't like a particular comedian's act then go see someone else. Comedians don't owe anyone an apology. So they can't complain, but its okay for you to complain about them complaining. Hey that's fair . Or not. Modern democracy (and the American state) evolved out of 18th Century European thought where this was the common belief regarding freedom of speech - "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Its a pity so many have forgotten thats its meant to be for all, not just for yourself and those that agree with just you. Political correctness used properly seeks to prevent abuse and in its purest form its a force for good. If you are basically a polite person than its existence shouldn't bother you and if you belief in freedom of speech you should defend to the death the rights of others to disagree with you. On the other end of the scale, there are people who use PC in a corrupt manner to bully and defame too in the same way that Jason Richards used racism to hurt someone in an argument. Again if you are basically a good person, you should easily be able to see both forms of extremism and avoid it. We are living on an ever more crowded planet. If there was ever a time that we as a species must learn how to get along with each other. Its now. At no time do I ever say that they can't complain, only that I'm tired of hearing it. Remember the subject is about Jokes and remember what you say about Freedom Of Speech - it is FOR ALL. So before the reverse psycho-babble of your initial statement read what you have written first. A comedian telling a joke in his act of any kind is not an abuse, it's part of his job and there are people who want to hear it. The people who don't and feel offended, don't have to go and see the act. In this case it is those who feel an apology is warranted who stand against all the things you have stated, not me. Also remember that what many call bullying today is simply people stating an opinion, but because others don't like it they say they are bullied. That's why you have freedom of speech. With 300 million people in the U.S., if 1mil say something and the other 299 complain, that doesn't make the 1mil wrong but we sure as hell are going to continuously hear the complaints. Look at all the so called phobias that are cried out. It is pretty much the same thing. First people don't seem to know what a phobia is, so when a person disagrees with something it's said to be a phobia when all that person is doing is stating an opinion. This is a personal belief and Freedom Of Speech, but damned be anyone who has one.

That's fine. But I'm tired of hearing people complain about others being too PC. There's nothing wrong with being sympathetic to other's feelings. Even if you don't agree with them.
That only means you won't be arrested for your speech. It doesn't mean you're free from all consequences. Or that people can't criticize you for it. Heck, that's their freedom of speech. Complaining is freedom of speech.
Just as you don't have to read or listen to people's complaints.

Both statements seek to prevent or hinder someone's else freedom of speech. The thing that people need to understand is that democracy functions due to the balance between rights and obligations. You have the right to drive a car, but you are obligated not to drink and drive and kill someone else. Rights have limits. This is normal. You only get one vote at an election. You cant covet someone else' property and take it. This is called theft. Even presidents are limited to only 2 terms of office. Limits are normal in a democracy. If there were no limits to car speed, alcohol use, taking things that dont belong to us etc etc, we would no longer be living in a democracy, we would be living in anarchy. In order to prevent democracy from slipping into anarchy society sets a limit on all things (including freedom of speech). Thats how democracy works. Whether you like it or not, people have the right to speech, complain etc That's much better than living in anarchy where people have the right to kill you to take whats rightfully yours. Democracy isn't perfect, but its pretty darn close. Thus and in closing if your position is, someone should be able to say anything they want, you are not a supporter of democracy, you are a supporter of anarchy.

A tricky tightrope because ultimately how do we claim personal responsibility and what can anyone define as offensive as well.

Problem is everyone has a differing discernible definition of a line.

If a comedian's joke offends someone, should they apologize for their joke? Should a comedian ever apologize for a joke? No. People who are overly sensitive about what others say don't need to be catered to.

No. People who are overly sensitive about what others say don't need to be catered to. It's not catering to apologize. That's not what that means. Also, who says they're overly sensitive? Is a rape victim who is offended by a rape joke overly sensitive? Is a woman who had an miscarriage overly sensitive for being offended by an abortion joke?
