I don't go out to the movies as often as I used to. Maybe 2-4 times a year. But it seems that each time I go or say 3 out of 4 times there are these inconsiderate assholes who I can hear whispering while I'm watching the movie where before it was never. I am there to listen to the movie. Not them. Either I'm becoming more sensitive to hearing it from these rude fuckers or else they are getting more bold and somehow thinking they have a right to be inconsiderate of others.
This most recent time, which was tonight, I kept on shushing the bitch but it didn't work. Next time I think I should be more bold and say out loud, "Shut up" or "Be considerate and be quiet." Something more assertive. What do you think about this? Experiencing more rudeness where you are and the best way to shut the assholes up?

I don't like it when people use their phone.

I go to the movies about 30-35 times a year and almost never encounter rude/talking/phone gabbering. The Big Screen is still my preferred way of watching movies. Nothing (except rising prices) has ever changed my mind about that.

I think it's a reflection of society in general. people are getting worse and lack basic respect for others etc. basically people are becoming more selfish which has a negative effect on society as a whole.
but anyways... I have only been to the theaters three times in this current decade. once in 2010(True Grit), twice in 2011(Drive/In Time). I did not have any problems but I think it's because when I seen Drive/In Time it was literally opening day at the first showing in my area and those movies are not popular enough with the masses and True Grit I suspect does not bring in the trash either. but seeing movies that tend to bring in the trash, I would generally avoid seeing in the theaters. basically if something is a bit too popular your likely to get those viewers who act up.
but I can imagine that since smart phones have been quite popular for roughly a decade now, that's going to be a issue as some people can't stay off those things for a couple hours to finish a movie. if they can't even stay off of a cell phone for a couple hours they probably should not be in the theaters watching a movie to begin with as they obviously don't care about the movie all that much if they are in the middle of it screwing with with their phone etc.

Not in my experience. Not sure if I lucked out or just didn't see the same movies they did.

I've encountered it no more, nor any less than in the past.

I don’t often have those kinds of idiots. But when I do, I wait for them to stop, and if not, I tell them to shut their asses up.

Very rude now. If I want to hear people chat, joke, and make calls, I'll go to a public library.

I tend not to see the big blockbuster films so my movie going experience has generally been good the past few years. Heck, most of the films I've gone to see have been almost vacant (not sure what that says about my tastes in film - haha).

The movie theater is another place where the anonymity provided almost encourages rudeness and trying to stop it just adds to the chaos.
Only the people who came with you know who you are and the talkers don't care that they are bothering anyone and have no intention of stopping doing what they do. Speaking up just makes more disturbance. Management doesn't care to encounter trouble on a personal level. .
Rather like no one can really stop or change the rudeness and anti=social behavior exhibited in a public chat room and trying to do so just adds fuel to the fires.

Cell phones going off, beeping, lights, some talking on them while sitting, or on their way outside... I've only gone about 2-3 times in the last 10-15 years. I enjoy watching from home.

They play this (quite loudly) immediately before every film at our usual cinema :

They can be considerate with turning those off but not enough to be talking to each other sitting there? I can get it with sharing a thought or two or a question since I have done that in a very low whisper but to say something every fucking time there is a break between dialog? m-slovak79
Your first statement makes sense. Society is moving in a more rude direction in places. Yeah, if you wanna chat, do that somewhere else. I don't get it why they are chatting at a movie which is what we are there for. Watching the movie is not talking time to each other in person or on the phone.

Yes. I gave up going to see superhero movies ages ago and only see them when they come out on DVD and Foxtel now 'cause they attract the worst crowds around here and you can't hear a thing and I hate guys who try to hit on you when you are watching a movie and put their arms around you and I had it happen a few times when I used to go to see a movie alone and my friends have too. A movie theatre is not a dating ground.

More? No. But I do think it can depend on the crowd and what time you go. I stopped going on Friday nights because teenagers tend to be loud and unruly and in great numbers.
But I remember going to see Scream 3 almost 20 years ago and someone brought a baby. By far the most annoying movie experience I’ve ever been to.

Edit: actually the most annoying moviegoing experience for me was when the employees thought me and my cousin had snuck in for some reason. They waited until a half hour into the movie to come find us with flashlights and ask to see us in the lobby where they asked to see our ticket stubs, which we showed them, then they said ok and we went back to our seats. I was furious. After the movie I insisted we got our money back for the interruption. They gave us movie bucks that we could spend on tickets or concessions. I was only 11 or I would’ve insisted we got the cash back.

mortsahlfanHell, I am surprised to see someone around here who's been to the theaters less than I have in that same time frame like if I count from 2003 to date (i.e. about 15 years) here is how many times I have been to the theaters... -LOTR3 (2003) -Terminator 3 (2003) -Wild Hogs (2007) -True Grit (2010) -Drive (2011) (opening day at the first showing in my area) -In Time (2011) (opening day at the first showing in my area. basically Oct 28th 2011 is the last time I went to the theaters.) so I have been to the theaters at least 6 times since 2003 to date but if I am missing anything, which I don't think I am, it's not much. but with that said... I agree with you as I prefer watching movies at home in HD over the theaters as while the theaters generally have a better sound setup than a typical home user does, I think a movie in HD on a decent TV looks all around better than projection in the theaters as I am more about image quality than screen size. plus, you don't have to risk any potential people acting up (I never had a problem in the occasions I have been to the theaters though) and you can pause the movie whenever you want to take a bathroom break or get a snack etc which is always a huge plus for home viewing over the theaters.

It's also taste. Even though I wasn't alive from the 1930-70s, 99% of what I love was made during that era, and after SO many awful newer movies, I (keep) tell myself to go with the probabilities.

I've been to a few movies in the theater this year, nothing happened, the only thing I could complain about was that there was no employee most times to accept my ticket. I could have just walked in and sat down and saved myself some money. I guess they were all busy making those "Value Meals" of soda, popcorn and candy for like $55.95.

mortsahlfanI see it seems your preference of 1930-1979 is my 1960's to date (especially 1990's to date) as looking at my percentages it breaks down like this for me... post-1990 = 78.8% (149 out of 189 movies) pre-1990 = 21.2% (40 out of 189 movies) (NOTE: only one movie is pre-1960) so basically... nearly 8 out of 10 movies among My Favorite Movies is from the 1990's to date which is why, while it's not absolute, I generally avoid seeing movies made prior to the 1960's as I feel things are a bit too different from today's movies as I pretty much see the 1960's as the early days of good movies but took decades later before the general volume of quality movies increased quite a bit. but yeah, since we know what we generally like and don't etc... like you said, it's just safer when we stick to what decades we like and mostly avoid decades we don't as for you it's pretty much all 1930-1979 where as me it's 1960's or newer, but largely 1990's and newer. hell, even if I shift to post-2000 vs pre-2000... in terms of volume of movies in My Favorite Movies it still favors the 2000's and newer but it's much more competitive then which is why if I use the pre-1990 vs post-1990 it greatly favors post-1990 at that point.
