Hit and miss for me. I loved Mork and Mindy as a kid but some of his stuff just wasn't all that great. Dead Poet's Society and Good Will Hunting proved that he was an excellent actor but misses for me were films like the Birdcage, and License to Wed which were horrible.

Watch the Movies " GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM", " ALADDIN", and " GOOD WILL HUNTING" and then ask yourself that Question Again!

He was manic and depressive bipolar.
When he was manic, he was funny, when he was depressed, he was a great actor.

Yeah, he's usually good. Check out The Fisher King (1991).

I wish I liked him more than I do because I am such a fan of Christopher Reeve and they were such good friends and Robin helped him out as much as anyone during a very hard time after his accident.
I did not like him in Good Will Hunting, which I really feel is a terrible film.
I did like his voice work in Aladdin, where his freestyling worked perfectly.
I have tried to watch Mork and Mindy but I just can't get into it.
I thought he perfectly cast as Popeye, a film that starts out with such promise but loses momentum.
In What Dreams May Come, a visual feast, he has his moments but not enough to recommend overall.
He's a very difficult actor to pin down as someone I like or dislike overall.
And then there is Hook, which again I think he had his moments.
But I enjoy his standup routines.
Dead Poet's Society showed me that he could do drama, reign in his 'comic' side.
I was very sad when he died, though.

Hell yeah. I liked him more as an actor than a comedian.

He was a GREAT dramatic actor, but hit or miss as a comedy actor.
When he was at the top of his comedic game he was brilliant though.

He wasn't merely a "good " actor, he was a GREAT actor. He was so versatile and showed off in Good Will Hunting, One Hour Photo, Insomnia , Hook, Mrs Doubtfire etc etc etc. He was literally a national treasure imo and a great loss too.

Have you seen Boulevard and/or The Night Listener? There are a handful of smaller movies that people haven't seen where he gives some excellent performances.

seize the day (1986) is an early dramatic role for Williams; as 1950s working man who loses his job and spirals into a nervous breakdown. A grim departure for him, and well acted.
moscow on the hudson (1984) probably features his most overlooked role as a Russian musician in NYC. Good 80s romantic comedy drama.
and an unhinged Seymour Parish in one hour photo (2002).

He sometimes overdid it with bland fare like Toys, Patch Adams, etc., but yes, I say he was a good actor both in drama and comedy. His performances in Dead Poets Society, Awakenings, The Fisher King, as the Genie from Aladdin, The Birdcage, Insomnia, One Hour Photo and even Death to Smootchy showed his versatility.

He was wonderful and hilarious when on a high. Genie is the single greatest character in Disney animated history. In live-action works, his performances were often surprisingly touching.
So I guess my answer is yes on both counts. He was a great actor and a very, very funny guy.

I love Will Smith and am glad he secured the role - even though I'm not too keen on a lot of the movies he appears in. I do believe he'll do a good job, but I can't imagine him surpassing Robin Williams. That performance can't be topped. It's not an issue for me, however, since I'm quite happy to see Smith do something a little different with the role. I definitely don't want to see a straight-forward by-the-numbers remake of the 1992 film.
