I think he actually confirmed this. He listed off movies that were inspirations for The Hateful Eight in a video I saw while he was promoting the movie.

Inspired by is very different from based on. It is not based on Stagecoach but Stagecoach is one of many sources of inspiration for The Hateful Eight.
