THE SPIDER WOMAN (1944) 4/5.
THE SPIDER WOMAN - AKA SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE SPIDER WOMAN AND SPIDER WOMAN - is the seventh film in the SHERLOCK HOLMES film series to feature Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. As with all of the Universal Studios productions in the SHERLOCK HOLMES film series, the film is set in the present day as opposed to the Victorian setting of the original stories. The music is by HJ Salter, the screenplay is by Bertram Millhauser and the film is produced and directed by Roy William Neill.
The film stars Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes, Nigel Bruce as Doctor John Watson, Dennis Hoey as Inspector Lestrade, Gale Sondergaard as Adrea Spedding and Mary Gordon as Mrs Hudson. It also features Vernon Downing, Alec Craig, Arthur Hohl, Teddy Infuhr and Lydia Bilbrook.
Although it is an original story, incorporates elements from several works by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, including THE SIGN OF THE FOUR, THE FINAL PROBLEM, THE ADVENTURE OF THE EMPTY HOUSE, THE ADVENTURE OF THE DEVIL'S FOOT and THE ADVENTURE OF THE SPECKLED BAND. An enjoyable addition to the SHERLOCK HOLMES film series.

Gale Sondergaard was very impressive indeed.
In fact, she did so well she came back and played a very similar role in THE SPIDER WOMAN STRIKES BACK, although that was technically not a sequel... unfortunately.
