Roman Polanski... I don't think you can beat having your famous actress / pregnant wife killed by a famous cult leader, and then raping an under-aged girl, and then spending your life on the lam!
Woody Allen a close second?

At this point, maybe John McTiernan? I know he was big during the 80s, but he hasn't done anything noteable lately except go to jail for perjury.

This. I can’t think of a more perfect example than that.

Depends largely on whether you pay more attention to actual films or to scandals, gossip and Hollywood Babble-On type publications.
The forgotten end of the Arbuckle story: The newspapers, led by William Randolph Hearst, generated Hollywood's first major scandal. Arbuckle was tried not once but three times for the criminal charges. The first two ended with hung juries. At his third and final trial in April of 1922, the jury not only returned a "not guilty" verdict but excoriated the prosecution for pursuing a flimsy case with no evidence of Arbuckle having committed any crime; it was at this final trial that the jury went further, writing a personal letter of sympathy and apology to Arbuckle for putting him through this ordeal. He kept it as a treasured memento for the rest of his life.

The Fugitive known as Roman Polanski I think what John Landis did was worse.

The Fugitive known as Roman Polanski I think what John Landis did was worse. Landis may have put actors in danger's way which caused some deaths, but I honestly believe that was a horrible accident. He didn't do that on purpose.
Unlike the guy who directed the un-released Midnight Rider, Randall Miller. That guy didn't even take precautions. There were SOOOO many ways that could've been prevented or prepared for.
And yeah, Salva's pretty bad too.

Is it sad that I only knew of Polanski’s rape history until recently, and on this board?

Landis broke the law by sneaking those children into where they shouldn't have been. If deaths occur on a set where the director didn't take the right precautions to prevent them, in my book that is worse than rape.

I thought the whole thing was that the helicopter was too close to the actors.
