Thanks for sharing petrolino Immediately, I thought of Bob Bailey, of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar fame, who was said to have an appearance better suited for radio. I suppose that you could say the same about William Conrad, who as Matt Dillon, had the perfect voice for the role, but his rotund features didn’t suit the part, and so he was overlooked. But Conrad, unlike Bailey, made the jump to the big screen, with good success, regardless. |

I watched William Conrad in his first major film role earlier this year, as a hitman in Robert Siodmak's 'The Killers' (1946). He cuts an imposing figure during the film's set-up alongside Charles McGraw.

He sure did, Petro. Conrad's voice was chilling, so deep, tough, always angry sounding. McGraw had a rough voice of his own but it sounds more like a caricature of how a tough guy talks (compared to Conrad anyway). The way the latter asks, for the second time, "have you got something to drink?" is one for the book.  |
