I second Hanks as Capt Miller in Saving Private Ryan. A neighbor, now deceased, was a captain in an armored division in WW2 and he thought Hanks nailed it: the average American called upon to become something he never thought he'd ever be and never wanted to be. De Niro in The Deer Hunter. Working-class guy goes to war and comes back different. I especially like the scenes when he returns to Clairton and doesn't feel at home anymore.  |
